I've learned back in the Windows XP days not to purchase licenses for OS's from any where other than Microsoft, or licensed retailers because any where else you are most likely getting sold a volume license that can expire at any given time and you won't know it until you go to reload your system. This happened to me. I bought an XP license from a Google Approved vendor and about a year later, I needed to reload my OS. After I reinstalled, my OS wouldn't activate. I called Microsoft support and when they looked up my license key (they asked me for a portion of the key) they confirmed that it was a volume license key that was no longer active. Couldn't do anything for me.
Always have bought cheap licenses off the net... never ever had any problems with them. And even if I did, they're so much cheaper oh well.

I didn't have problems activating either, but down the road when I had to reload my system, that's when I ran into problems when the OS wouldn't activate and it was because what was sold to me as a retail license was actually a volume license that was no longer active.

Does this work to upgrade the installed Windows Home, or do I need a clean install?

"Scooped up a free and filthy older computer left at the curb. The Windows 7 pro license key was still readable on the Microsoft label stuck to the case. Used that key to activate Windows 10 on my latest PC build. For saving $50 one might look locally for any old unwanted PCs to scavenge the license key from. If the system still boots up you can use Magical Jellybean keyfinder to get the license keys for Microsoft products including windows and office. YMMV"

One other thing to try that has worked for me in the past is to go to the local Goodwill. Some have old PCs on the shelf with Win 7 0r 8 stickers. Snap quick picture and use that key to activate. I've had about 50-50 success.

I bought this two weeks ago. Worked just fine. Less risk than a license from a key website, IMO. In for a few more. I use these keys to upgrade Windows 10 Home to Professional.

It is more difficult to find computers and laptops on sale that have Windows 10/11 Professional. Just buying an upgrade key is almost always cheaper.
More difficult than what? Almost every $150 mini PC comes with Windows Pro out of the gate and most if not all business laptops/devices have pro. You can also upgrade if you really need it. Unless you use native encryption (bitlocker), AD, or remote desktop windows pro is not really needed for a home user. Even with that there are many free desktop projection methods so even RDS is a nice to have. You can also use Veracrypt for FDE for free. Funnily on my Mac its free. So I save save your money there are alternatives to the glaring pieces missing from home if you use them.

I buy used PC for the fam and the first thing I do is rip off Windows and put Linux on it and I don't have to worry about it ever again. If they need office apps you can do them online or for the boomers I install LibreOffice. I just revived a 10 year old Lenovo w/ Mint and it runs like a champ. No Redmond data gathering needed.

When installing Windows 10 you put in the key from Windows 7. If you need to find your key you can run a free tool such as keyfinder from Magical Jelly Bean. You could also run the windows 10 upgrade which is a free download from Microsoft but I'd recommend doing a clean install where you start with a clean slate. Performing an in place upgrade from windows 7 to windows 10 will often cause weird problems that are not obvious at first. Hope this helps.

For those of you who partook in this purchase through Woot, are your keys still valid? A little over a year later and the keys I purchased are no longer valid. Curious to know if anyone else was impacted.

Thanks.
