I used a third-party app, Notify for Amazfit, and it works extremely well.
My son is about to turn 8 and just got this... He likes it a lot, you can turn off all of the unnecessary things that show up on the screen... I just have to look for a smaller band for him

I have had two fit bits in the past and they lasted just over a year and a half for both... Same for my wife. I don't think they are worth the cost.
My 6 year old has been using one since last August connected through my phone. I was able to set it so it doesn't alert him when my phone rings or mess with my own activity stats in Apple Health.
Sometimes he messes with my phone's volume but I'm sure I could turn that off if it gets annoying.
It was mainly to see if he liked it and to have him practice taking care of a watch. Turns out he wears it often and likes to count his steps.
