even in the most ideal situations with a fairly quiet, constant background noise (like a fan), the "cancelling" was in most cases literally imperceptible. so at least for the old version, they weren't competing with the expensive brands as a cheaper alternative, they were competing with the dirt cheap chinese brands as a more expensive alternative.
it seems with this version they've firmly planted their flag on what side they wanted to be on (the latter). these are a more "premium" version of the crappy chinese no-name $20 earbuds you see literally all over the place
just imagine how bad the battery life will be if you add active noise cancelling
