Saying you're an early adopter is a stretch if you're only on year 3. You must be doing something wrong if you're having battery issues already . I am on year 7 and my batteries degraded to like 50%. Still using all my original batteries the came with the tools.

I am an early EGO adopter (got them when Home Depot had the contract with them). I have 5 of their tools and 4 of their batteries. I am on year 3 and all my batteries are turning into paperweights. My 5ah hold like 30% of their original charge, and my 2.5ah literally give me 15 minutes or less on like my leaf blower.

The tools work great. The convenience of electric is super. But I am mad I am going to have to drop $500 already on some new batteries. There is no way I would even come close to $500 of gas at this point.

I'm not saying don't go electric/EGO, just be aware that you will be replacing these batteries MUCH FASTER than you anticipate. Don't go electric because you think it will be cheaper in the long run - it won't be.

I don't the the lone batteries are really a deal unless you already have all the tools you want? You can get the 765 blower for $300 with a 5ah battery for example, and that blower is pretty beast. Or a 650 blower for 220 or so.

Question for the ego owners:
I have an early model mower and it worked great when I first got it. Now I have some issues:

1) pressing the handle still moves the mower forward, but only at a base speed. The speed gauge no longer works and regardless of what setting it is on (fastest setting down to the slowest), it only moves at the base speed.
2) it isn't doing the best job cutting the grass anymore. Also terrible striping and coverage patterns. I bought a new ego mower blade, the 'high lift' one meant for creating for air flow and lifting the grass into the bag, and it helped a TINY bit, but still not that impressive.

Is my mower battery being old having an impact on performance? Should I consider getting a new mower next year?
Same issue with the mower. Your wiring harness broke inside. There are YouTube videos. I'm guessing you store it folded? Mine is the same way only stuck at max speed.

I've had 2 batteries for 5 years. I think a lot of people don't understand how to care for batteries. Keep them cool and dry (duh). But also always charge as slow as possible. I have a slow charger and a fast charger. If i dont need the battery right away i put it on the slow charger. If its hot, i swap the batteries fater. I never run it down to zero and if im storing them long term over the winter i try to use about 20% of the battery before putting it away.

Batteries dont like being too hot or too cold. They dont like being over 80% or under 20% charged. If you can make an effort to follow these rules, your batteries will last way longer. I just had a battery totally die this year, but i think i got water into the controller. The other battery still holds at least 80% of its original charge.

I'll check for some videos then, thanks! And yes, I store it folded every single time.

$40 more and you get a blower. Going this route and bet I can sell the blower for at least $80 pretty easily.
Same, i have the backpack blower and i may sell that one - its a bit of a pain to use a lot of the time.

Yep had one too and sold it off. Definitely way bulky for my needs. The regular one I have (maybe the same as in this deal?) is solid.

I agree this sucks. I was thinking of just buying the Milwaukee ones since I already have lots of the batteries. The strange thing is the Milwaukee batteries don't seem to go bad this quickly. Not sure why EGO batteries suck so bad.

$100 more gets you the 18 inch chainsaw too
I love my 18" EGO chainsaw! Every bit as good as gas without the maintenance headaches.

$150 for whatever tool this would run plus the cost of charging it would buy you a lot of gas.
Lol, the cost of charging...
My lawn takes right around my 9ah worth of batteries for full mow, trim, edge, and blow sidewalks if I don't let it get unruly. We'll round up to 10ah and assume $0.10 per KWH, which is more than I pay (again rounding up). That come out to 0.56 KWH (56V x 10Ah), if you assume 1 KWH due to charger inefficiencies (rounding WAY up) we come out to $0.10 per mow/trim/edge/blow.

I agree the tools & batteries are expensive, but replace when you need new stuff anyways and it's less of a killer. The real benefit is being able to always have a full "tank" to do your work, never having to go to gas station, no storing gas, no extra gas at end of season that sits for months, and (for me) no mixing gas for trimmer/edger!
I'm only ariund a year in, but no sign of bad degradation of batteries like others had mentioned, hoping to never have those issues! 🤞

Ego will also not warranty any of their components unless you were the original purchaser. So if you buy one of these second hand at a garage sale, you are on your own.

I havent noticed much dropoff over four years for mine - maybe 5%. I have a 7.5, a 5, and a 2.5 aH. Do you leave them in your garage over winter? I think temperature has a significant impact on these batteries over time. I always bring mine indoors, which may make a difference. I think leaving on charger can as well, but don't quote me there.

$20 more gets you this battery and a Blower at Ace Hardware. Shipping is ridiculous though, so you need a store nearby for local pickup.
I ordered one two weeks ago with free local delivery. There was a deal on ACE gift cards at 15% off too.

My 2.5ah has given me 15 minutes from day 1 on my leaf blower (it's a gen 1). I just got the newest 2.5ah and it seems 2-3x stronger/longer lasting than the gen 1. But what you are describing is the status quo and unchanged from NIB, in my experience.

I am in the exact same situation. I can't finish my lawn with a 7.5, 5.0, and 2.5. When I first started I could just use the 7.5 and have time to spare. Huge waste of money.

Another long-time Ego customer here. I'm at 8 or so batteries. Have the main tools (mower, snow blower, leaf blower, string trimmer, hedge trimmer, and chainsaw). Not a ton of use on any of the individual items. Batteries always stored inside.

So far I had one 5ah battery go bad right before the warranty period. Fortunately, that was replaced. Right now, another 5ah battery is bad (just outside the warranty). I have another couple 2.5ah batteries that are bad.

I'm limping along but now only have a single 7.5ah and 5ah battery left for the mower and show blower. Soon as one of those craps out I'm at least another $200-$300 bucks for a replacement battery. Seriously considering transitioning away from Ego. Super sad as their other stuff works great. No complaints (outside of price). But their batteries are just not cutting it. Either need to be cheaper or built better for long-term use.
