For anyone interested in these, they are very fun cameras to shoot with! They shoot in 360 but you can reframe them using the app to be a 16:9 or 9:16 or 1:1 ratio if you just plan to post on instagram or youtube. Being able to not just re-frame, but adjust the camera angle, the zoom (from super fisheye to normal) make for some fun videos that you don't have to worry about framing on.

With that said, a few things I found out pretty quickly about it after buying:

The X3 is supposedly waterproof down to 33 feet, but if any of the doors on it are open (and apparently sometimes even if they're not!) it will die. I've seen a handful of posts about people who took it in water and it ended up dying. They do sell a dive case for it.

While it shoots in 5.7k, remember that this is the entire 360 degrees. When you export in 16:9 or 9:16, you'll likely get something closer to 1080p which will look like 720p.

The RS 1 inch (about $800) will give you much better picture quality, especially at night. Sensor size is 4x the size of the X3, but it's not waterproof and misses some of the fun features like slow-motion and bullet time.

If you do get any of these, I recommend getting the Invisible Selfie Stick to go with it. Even the 3 foot one is plenty for this.

The lenses are the last thing -- when you start to actually use this, you'll find that the lenses are very prone to getting banged around (especially on a selfie stick or in action sports). Once you get a chip or scratch on them, it will always show up in anything you shoot. It sucks. Bang it against a tree or pole while doing a pan? doing sports and have a fall? any of them can easily mess up your lens quality. They do make stick-on lens covers (but they'll affect your image quality, and add a more noticeable "seem" to where the lenses meet together in your videos.. and then the dive cases (which also offer extra protection, more waterproofing.. but will add a larger seem/transition in your videos)

I opted to keep the RS 1 inch because the quality was so much better for me.

One last note: You can edit videos either on your phone or in the desktop app. The Phone app seems to have the most features and be easiest to use.. the desktop app is lacking those but has a higher export output.

Personally.. Assuming this isn't in Costco's "90 day return window" and has their standard "return anytime for any reason" return policy, I would pay the extra for the peace of mind that you have the option to take it back if the lenses get damaged or it leaks.
Insta360's HQ is located in China.. so in addition to any repair costs, you need to mail your 360 to them in China which can be timely/costly, and then wait for it back. I've heard lens repairs are about $200?

90 days.
It's 1 year for member. You can find the "Last day to return" in order detail page, and mine shows 05/18/2024.

I wonder if this item is being calculated incorrectly. Clearly states 90 days for Outdoor Electronics in the Returns Policy Exceptions [rei.com] which includes cameras:

"Outdoor electronics
These items must be returned within 90 days of purchase. Outdoor electronics include:
Activity monitors
GPS-enabled devices
Bike trainers
Emergency-communication devices
Cameras"

I don't think I'm going to jump on this sale, but anyone purchasing may want to clear it up with customer service; 90-days vs 1-year is a big difference.

This camera is excellent on its own, and the software really makes it shine. Used it in snowy conditions plenty this winter, no issues. The battery so much better than prior gens. For $360 this is a steal.

$360 + $30 lifetime membership + tax would be around $415?

If you don't want to buy from REI in the future then paying membership fee is a waste. I purchased my membership decade ago for $15 or $20 and I personally love it and it totally worth it.

Also there are many ways to get the REI GC with discount, I got mine from my life insurance company for 15% off, which made the total $306 before tax.

Yea you're right. I think i've only made an online purchase from REI twice. I'd probably go for the Costco deal.

I currently have the original Insta360 one X and looking to see if this is a big upgrade. I don't see any video comparison between the original one X vs X3. I asked many reviewers from Youtube and they said that it is a big upgrade especially with the HDR mode. But one person - the Best360 guy said that it's a slight upgrade when it comes to video quality. The original one X to me still delivers great video quality when there's full sun.

This camera has water proofing problems.

And much like another Chinese company DJI, they also require you to activate the camera via a phone app that sends data to their Chinese servers. Just out of principle, this on its own make this camera a hard pass for me.
