I stayed at the Outrigger Malia back in 1986, treated my mom to a Hawaiian trip. 8 days/7 nights including airfare for both of us from LAX, flower lei on arrival, free transfer from airport to hotel and return - total price was $550! Hard to believe now, but it wasn't an unbelievable deal back then, just a good deal. We rented a car from Rent-A-Wreck (do they still exist?) - it was actually a decent compact car - for $10 a day for all 8 days, and free parking in the hotel garage. Ate at some buffets, and fast food the rest of the time. Had a blast.
When I see these "deals" now, it's sad how far we've come since those days. Dollar sure doesn't buy what it used to...that's for sure.

Ever since Kauai was bought out by movie stars, everything is overpriced and you're fee'd to death.
You could then use them to book nights at The Royal Hawaiian, Sheraton or Ritz - you might need to pay extra for any excess points, and still pay resort fees & parking, but you'll get a much better product with great pools.
Also, these hotels charge insanely for cabana rentals. You could rather purchase a couple of sets (beach chairs, umbrella etc) and a cooler from Costco and use it for entire week, that would still cost less compared to renting every day.
We were not directly on the beach.
Car required.
Expect to pay a fortune for prepared foods when you go out. Expect to pay $7/gallon milk on side of the road places. It's not cheap.
We have 2 littles and normally all 4 of us can fit in a king bed (and the kids prefer it). If i change the amount of guests to 4, only the option for two queen beds shows up. If I change it to 2 people, the king option shows for the $199/night. Anyone know if that will be a problem if we booked one king for 2 adults and then have the littles sleep with us? It says resort fees are waived but is that per stay or per person? Trying to decide the best way to book it.

For those that book with a federal discount, you do not need to be on official duty. All you had to do is tell them that you are a government employee and to show them your federal work badge.
