just fyi
X
3.0 out of 5 stars Stopped working after 7 weeks
Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2023
Color: BlackVerified Purchase
I bought one of these and it worked so well to begin with, so I bought a second one. Now, both units don't work anymore, and they are past the replacement window. Wow, $110 down the drain! They were great while they worked, but they just quit and won't come on. Bought within a week of each other and quit working within a week of each other!

Edit ... 5/17/2023
OK, I got a new bulb and replaced it, the zapper is working. This is the one I purchased Mar 16th, so the bulb lasted about 6-7 weeks. At $15 per bulb, this is going to be VERY expensive. Lowering my star rating on this due to the expense. I don't mind changing the bulbs, but these cost $44 each, then $15 per replacement bulb each 6-7 weeks, well, I need to find a different zapper that will last longer!! I purchased the second zapper Mar 27th, and the bulb quit at the same time as the first zapper so it only lasted 5-6 weeks! Buyer beware. I bought the first two replacement bulbs at a cost of $22 when I ordered the second bug zapper (luckily), but this company no longer has the bulbs available at the lower cost and they are going on Amazon for around $13-15, which is definitely making this cost prohibitive.

Maybe you can lure the mosquitos by spraying some human blood on there, some sweat, spit, and.. Put a recording next to it of you going "Ahhh so many mosquitos, I don't want to get bit.."

They will come in droves

Was it an article written by a bug hugger? Mine slays mosquitos all night. Keep most of them away from us when we are outside. Nothing is 100% but helps a ton

I asked my A.I. friend Bing if bug zappers work on mosquitoes.

Here's what it said:

Bug zappers do kill mosquitoes, but they may not be the most effective way to control mosquito populations. Mosquitoes are not attracted to ultraviolet light in the way that many other insects are, making the usual type of bug zapper almost useless in getting rid of them 1. Research indicates that only a minuscule fraction of the bugs killed by bug zappers are mosquitoes 2. There are electronic bug zappers that deal specifically with mosquitoes by emitting the pheromone octenol, sometimes in combination with carbon dioxide 1. Would you like more information on this topic?

EDIT: My manager says he would still buy and use this though. This coming from a guy who would club baby penguins if he could get one extra MPG on his Prius

these things don't work. So silly for you guys to buy these. Get a carbon monoxide machine. Those are the real deal. These are snake oils.

Have a larger one of these of a different, more reputable brand. Florida. These definitely kill many many bugs. But, but... mosquitoes are not attracted to it at alll without the additional chemical (octenol) they come with. So, we always need to replenish that, no big deal, it then indeed attracts and kills mosquitoes too, but, but... it attracts so many other bugs so well that bugs that previously had zero interest in your area can't help going to it, so definitely do not make the mistake of placing it close too close to where _you_ want to be because invariably you worsen your situation. Also, think about which direction the bugs would mainly come from (nearby woods, alleys, etc) because you want to avoid being a pit stop along the bug's journey to da-preddy-light.

In my case, while it felt great to hear the melodic zapping, I really felt it didn't reduce the mosquitoes that got to me and my family in any significant way, despite my being aware of everything I just mentioned, so I stopped using it years ago. Perhaps my location's layout has to with it.

Anyhow, I did not achieve true late-afternoon/evening outside-ability here till I bought a propane fogger (check reviews for a cheap good one, many current ones have issues). Fog your area half an hour before you go out, and bam, several hours of zero stings. Plus, oddly enough, fogging at night doesn't seem to affect as many (but still does) of the good bugs as the lamp does.

Is the one [costco.com] at Costco better? I think it's like $50 ish when on sale...
I have the Costco one. We aren't outside much, but I do use it inside…. For 3 years now off and on. We have 5 dogs and between them in and out, kids leaving the back door open, and kids leaving food packages open in the pantry we have had issues with flies and moths. Plugging the Costco one in and leaving it on in the kitchen overnight eliminates flies. Putting it in the pantry eliminates moths.
Might order this smaller one for those purposes, and let the big one actually go outside!

(But really, we tried SO MANY things for pantry moths and THIS is what finally worked! Oh and the bulb on the Costco one has lasted as a year with regular use.)

Have a bad mosquito problem in my house. Unfortunately I went in the wrong order, bought a best in class zapper for $150, and when it didn't work did the research. The experiment was literally counting good bugs vs. bad bugs in a zapper and found a minute number of mosquitos compared to other bugs. The other day my son got bit up but I couldn't find the culprit. I laid on his bed for all of 30 seconds breathing deeply in and out, and that sucker bee-lined (mosquito-lined?) towards me to get zapped with my handheld zapper.

TL;DR, it's the CO2, stupid.

The bug zapper will most likely be more effective against bugs, not so much against mosquitoes. To battle against them mosquitoes, you will need the octenol lures:

Too many nimbys here in the us. We can and know how to. But if it's done there will be a thousand expensive lawsuits and then a bunch of fake health claims, foolish short sighted eco warriors, etc.

The big propane ones work well. The dynatrap are decent that use a coated bulb to emit some co2 then suck them in. Better with the attracting smell packets they sell. I have 2 dynatraps one half acre and one 1 acre which is way overkill for my yard. Then toms mosquito bucket things 2 or 3 that use yeast to attract them and trap. Then I also spray spring and fall with off backyard spray. Seems to be a decent combo.
Oh and mosquito dunks in any standing water areas.

I have bought three different band names of bug zappers for personal and business uses. Gootop lasted only one week. Then, no more power. All other brands are still going.

For personal use, I had to change an electrocute one to a sticky glue one because my dog got extremely scared of the very loud zapping noise from the electrocution.

I thought bug zappers caused insects to explode when they get zapped spraying bits of insect everywhere.

This does not kill mosquitoes or any flying insect you actually care about killing
