Even the old BPA bottles only leached with very high temps and/or very long storage periods. It's all very overblown and rode the coattails of mass media fearmongering, mostly around baby products — understandable.

BPA-free is objectively better, I'm just saying they made it sound like we were drinking cyanide

Because 1) the TAL is 1lb 11 oz empty while two x 32 oz Nalgene is a little over 12 oz, 2) the 32 oz Nalgene will fit in the water bottle holders in my backpack, and 3) my water filtration pump screws directly into the wide mouth Nalgenes.

It's all about the use case.

Nope - only one membership at REI. If you wait sometimes they offer a 30 dollar gift card when you pay the one time membership fee of 30 dollars. Membership essentially pays for itself.

BPA free often just means that the manufacturer replaced BPA with something similarly bad like BPS...
Which it's also free of. Phtalate free as well. Next chemical?

I have two nalgenes I store sideways in a waist pack for hikes. No issues over the last couple times I've stored them this way. ::shrug:: they might leak for someone, but are working for me.
Leach is a different word than leak. The claim is that nalgene bottles leach chemicals into the water inside them when exposed to sunlight (UV).

This is a highly debated subject and there is much disagreement.

This is further compounded by the fact that these bottles are 50% recycled plastic, and who knows if the plastic used is BPA/BPS/phthalate free.

These are solid bottles, I have several from past deals. Excellent for travel and the gym. They are BPA free so no idea where the leach comment is coming from…

These are BPA free bottles so don't leech BPA into beverages.
Why take a chance when you can get vacuum sealed stainless steel for a few dollars more?

Help! Why would I choose a wide or narrow mouth bottle?

This was literally done (given, with NIH funds) by people with major stakes in Nalgene/Triton competitors that lost a lawsuit against them for mischaracterizing similar research from 2011.

Metal bottles can also leach chemicals depending on their composition, lining, etc. This applies to any canned, bottled, etc., liquid you may be consuming.

Point being, know what your buying and make a decision your comfortable with.

Personally, I use a stainless steel bottle and don't keep water in it for extended periods and generally just drink water out of a glass at home.

I personally prefer wide mouth because they are easier to clean. Narrow mouth is easier to drink from.

how do I measure my mouth to tell if it is wide or narrow? I think i might be able to fit my lips around the rim of the "wide mouth" bottle, but it would be uncomfortable...

I agree. By no means am I saying that someone should use a specific bottle type instead of a Nalgene bottle. I'm just showing some of the evidence relating to issues associated with Nalgene bottles. It's disappointing that manufacturers chose to utilize less-studied substance over BPA...as the replacement substances may (or may not) be more harmful than BPA. This just shows that more research is needed on these substances (and all of the other substances we directly/indirectly use and come in contact with every day).
