Larger companies have carrier contracts, the cost to ship the heavy items is offset by the shipping of much more smaller items all under one umbrella contract

Keep in mind this is a "storage" bench only at only 20". I initially thought it was a workbench and found myself disappointed once reality set in.

I wish I understood how places can offer free shipping on something like this that is very heavy and a pain to move.

Gotta be a profit loss.

For items like these I prefer ship to store. Less chance of shipping denting/damage- and if there is don't have to haul it to the store to return, already there.
Of course downside is having to haul it home.

Thinking of picking this up for a TV stand. Like it better and more robust than your "wood" veneer stands.
Maybe it's different where you are but here ship to store just means ups drops it off at the store vs your house. They don't even remove the ups label when I pick it up. The damage chance is the same since it's still ups delivering it. Also when I have had damaged goods arrived at the store they pretty much always tell me I have to call the support number unless what I want is a full refund and they can do that in the store. I used to do everything ship to store but really the only benefit now is if it's damaged and heavy I don't have to deal with it in my car but I'm not sure that really offsets having to pick everything up.

Sometimes 'home depot' free shipping is literally an 18 wheeler driving around to job sites.
I ordered something small once and I'm on a cul de sac off a one way and a TRAILER pulled up with bricks/sheetrock & wood with my small material on it lol

I told the guy id have picked it up if i knew they were doing that

Logistics isn't always well thought out until a company starts going in the red haha

Deal like this would be incentive for me to go with Husky for garage system vs other brand.
I mix and match, I don't pick a "system" then stick with it. There's no compatibility issue like with power tools or battery systems, and I don't have anyone in my garage being appalled or shaming me because everything doesn't match perfectly. Definitely a function over form deal for me.

Would make a solid tv stand except that the shelves might be too small for a receiver/Xbox/center speaker. I've seen so many tv stands with flimsy build that can't hold much. Also, if you're picky about sound and you do have an AVR and speakers - this being made of metal could rattle.

It's not at a profit loss. How does that make sense?

Many of these items are sold well over margin, especially since this is a Home Depot house brand. They also rebrand and reconfigure these for multiple vendors, so the manufacturer is likely doing well enough on volume to sell these near cost.

It's also a type of item they regularly stock in stores, so even if they aren't shipping this particular model, they probably already transport something similar.

Finally, shipping to store is something they already have to do, so it's done on volume anyway.

The same logic is applied for shipping to home with these items. It usually goes to your local store on volume and then they have a local independent contractor deliver it to you.

Besides, it's Home Depot. They aren't exactly hurting for business and even if they were, their founder and corporate team are a bunch of scumbags.

This is a nice bench. I got it years ago and it looks brand new still. Using it as a shoe storage box to sit on while putting on shoes, lol. I do not recall how much I paid for it though. I would think it was cheaper than $200 since everything has increased a lot in recent years.

Yeah, it's more of a credenza than a bench. It would be good near your door to the house to put down groceries and what not, but not great as a work surface.

Almost bit, but the 20" counter is too low for comfort.

Wonder if this would be good for an ooni pizza oven table?
Yes, if you have toddlers or dwarves baking pizza. It's 20" high.

Reviews are not that good, and it is VERY small. Looking tat photos online, each shelf is tall enough to hold a pair of shoes. It's just a tiny little cabinet for $200.
