Just snagged one. Honestly, 4tb, 64gb ram is overkill; but it is a dream config especially at $1700 off!

Grabbed one, nice deal. For the same price as the $3200 64GB/2TB M1 Max Mac Studio, you're getting the same CPU, GPU, and RAM, but with 2TB extra storage, a really nice display, portability, and better repairability (the Studio isn't as friendly to being taken apart).

It's a bit overkill (I only need 2TB/32GB), but discounts this deep on BTO configs are rare and its specs will help it hold its aftermarket value better than the more common models.
If the iMac pro is any guide, the fully speced model might not hold value well. Just a week ago, i bought a fully speced iMac pro very good condition out of eBay for about $1550 before shipping and tax. The original price tag for this 2017 Apple iMac Pro 27-inch 2.3GHz Intel 18-Core, 128GB DRAM, 4TB SSD, Vega 64 16GB is about $14,000 before tax. Luckily $3,200 isn't anything crazy like iMac pro here but you could easily lose $2,500 after 6 years of usage.

I like your true-world example. Just as iPhones. when you do a trade-in, the base and the extra storage you paid for the premier models will have a negligible diff in the trade-in value. A lot of people will think double the memory is like double the entire product price, but the fact is not.

Well, I am struggling here as I badly want a fully loaded machine, but I wish it is a PC-like thing that we can config and update on our own.

Long live the IBM PC... ironically they even ceased out of the pc market and sold it to Lenovo.

Since when does Costco start a trade-in program?
it's been around for a few years. Prices are competitive with Best Buy and amazon. It's done by a third party company but the partnership with costco means they pay by Costco gift card.last year I traded in two different 8 year old iPad Air 2s. They paid $55 each, which was very good for old tech.

All true, but the iMac Pro being an Intel machine no doubt negatively impacts its resale price. It came from the era where Intel was stuck making 14nm CPUs, which allows an M1 Air to trounce the 18-core iMac Pro in single-core performance and an M2 Air to beat it in multicore performance. Apple is also probably done releasing new Intel Macs at this point, meaning that the clock is ticking on continued software updates for Intel Macs.

my macbook no longer got updates after 10 years and now cannot install the latest version of xcode. since this macbook is already 2 years old, that means it will only be supported for another 8 years. kind of defeats the purpose of paying extra $$ to future proof your purchase...

this is a machine for professionals to get work done. It's not some toy you get cause you have money
lol Big Grin I know what it is. I was saying I cannot spend that kind of money to do software development. I can spend it only when I have million dollars so I can comfortably spend it on such expensive Macbook.

I used to own an IBM PC in the late 1990s and have spent numerous hours on it. Very nice solid machine. Brings me very good memory. A fully loaded machine is more about bragging rights if lets say 64gb memory and 4tb ssd is way over what you require for your work. $3,200 isn't terrible, however.

All valid points. In my use case, I found myself needing an Intel machine because I can install some Window programs including some PC games I like to play from time to time. Wow, I don't even know M2 air beat it in multicore performance. From Youtube reviews, i noticed this fully loaded iMac pro trade blows with M2 in different benchmarks. I know the clock is ticking on continued software updates but expect it to be another 3 or 4 years before they stop. Not sure how much I will lose on my purchase price of $1,755(total price). I personally own the 16 inch M1 max 24 core, 32gb ram and 512 gb ssd from the same vendor. The battery isn't that great but otherwise very solid especially the pro motion.
