This is a fantastic headphone at a great price.
Anyone looking for one of the best sounding "audiophile" headphones for a "reasonable" price -- this is it. These are usually at the top of every "best open-back headphone for under $500" list. I think I paid about $270 for mine a few months ago.

At 300 ohms, you will need a headphone amp, if you want to get them really loud. If you want to run off of an iPhone/etc...I would recommend an externa DAC so you can benefit from the HiRes files on Apple Music / Qobuz / etc.
Again, these are audiophile headphones -- so they're NOT going to sound like "beats".

Great find. I would be all over this, if I didn't already have a pair.

That bit about the dedicated amp is important.

I wanted to order these for piano usage but decided against it for that exact reason.

I went with the hd560s for a few dollars more. Feels a little bad but I really didn't want to convolute the setup.

Thoughts on this? I'm not totally opposed to the amp idea if there's a tremendous improvement.

Don't feel bad about the HD560s, they trade blows in music with the 600 series but are much better for gaming. The 6xx will sound warmer, but the 560s have a wider soundstage and more accurate imaging; both of which are what you want for gaming. Between the 560s, and any of the 600 series models you're basically just choosing different flavors to your taste.

If you want a DAC + AMP for the 560s there are multiple companies that make a combo that will be at $200 or less:

Schiit
JDS Labs
iFi
Topping
Fiio

I have a "Schiit stack" - what the hobbyists affectionately refer to for a DAC+AMP combo from Schiit. In my case the Magni Heresy amp plus Modi 3 DAC.

These days I find myself more often using the Qudelix 5k portable DAC+AMP for $109 since I take it with me wherever I go and then I just plug it into my PC once I'm back home.

The HD6xx while nice have a noticeable MIDBASS hump that doesn't suit instrument monitoring. I love my 560s.

Thank you for the input. It's a bit difficult to just read about these things and sift through what "sounds good" versus what "accurately reproduces sound".

These are for my wife that is learning piano. I ordered the HD560s as well as the sony mdr-7506 for her to try both and see if she likes either or if I should continue the search. Smilie

She's on an EZ300( psr e373 with learning lights) right now and is fast approaching the want/need for a much fancier unit with 88 weighted keys and all that good stuff. My thinking is that a consistent set of headphones should allow her to isolate the units she tests out to the key functions and audio processing only while maintaining a consistent sound output via said headphones.

Seconding this, especially the recommendation to get a headphone amp to get the best out of them (and see recommendations a few posts after the original).

To expand on that a bit: the HD6xx sound fantastic directly connected to a phone - you will almost certainly realize why people rave about them - but you will feel like you just can't get full volume out of them. Add a decent amplifier, and you get to appreciate what they are capable of. Add a DAC (digital decoder), and you may start to realize why people spend so much money on this kind of equipment. The HD6xx shouldn't really be considered $250 headphones; they should be $250 plus whatever you pay for DAC & amplifier.

Also worth bearing in mind: the HD6xx were based on the Sennheiser HD600 and HD650, which in their time were $400-500 headphones, which would make them closer to $800-1000 now, and at those prices they were the reference point for entry-level audiophile-quality headphones. In that light, $249 or $189 for the HD6xx is an incredible bargain.

Seconding the Schiit Stack recommendation, if you're looking for something to leave at your desk.

If you want something portable: I have the iFi iDSD Nano Black Label DAC+amp which is very good at around $250. iFi also make another portable DAC+amp called the "Hip-Dac", which has very good reviews; the Dragonfly Red (250) or Cobalt (400+) also have well-established fantastic reputations. Schiit don't make a portable DAC/amp so you can't take your Schiit with you :/.

These are a great deal at full price, however, they used to go a bit cheaper when on sale in the past. The way of the world I guess.

Anyways, fantastic headphone for the money. Terrific midrange in perticular for me.

As for amps, lots of cheap options can power them fine but you will get the best out of them on a good tube amp. The Bottlehead Crack is kind of a go to recommendation with them and sounds fantastic in a price range that is within reason with these headphones. It is a DIY kit you build yourself, but is made for beginners and is pretty simple. The tube sound adds to the soundstage and works well with the high impedance generally. It also will distort in the second harmonic which is pleasant and natural sounding instead of digital odd number harmonics.

I got to listen to a slightly modded set with a Chord Dave ($14K DAC) and custom tube amp with a custom power supply that I did not even want to ask the price of and I was simply blown away. The sounded better than some mush more expensive headphones have ever sounded to me with some of the music I like. And I have been fortunate enough to listen to many expensive headphones. Kind of funny to listen to $200 headphones on a system that cost as much as a new car, but these headphones really scale pretty well and a friend in our community has really nice stuff we get to try. They sound good on affordable gear, but sound even better on really nice gear.

These have crazy clamping force. You will absolutely want to leave them on something to "stretch" them overnight a few times.

I also personally replaced the ear pads.
