"So I walked into 14 subway restaurants with their coupons. Two of them as far as 100 miles away from where I live. I could have obsessively done more stores, but this isn't my full time job and I did it opportunistically anytime I spotted a subway until the validity date on the coupons. None of the outlets accepted the coupons. They refused politely.
In New Jersey, most of the franchise owners are Indian and being Indian myself, it wasn't difficult to strike up a conversation and ask them what the deal with these coupons was. Some owners who I spoke to told me that corporate wouldn't stop spamming people with these coupons and that the franchise outlets are not compensated for "participating" in the coupon nonsense. So naturally, no one participates, because they'll take the losses (selling 3, footlong sandwiches for $17). So it's optional. Why does subway send these out then? Turns out it's the store footfall. People walk in to the store and when they try to use the coupon, they'll find out that the store does not accept it. I asked the guy if anyone just walks away after finding out that the coupons are useless? Three people told me that a large number of people would still end up buying a sandwich, (paying ful price, without the coupon) since they are already in the store.
This is a scam. And a scam subway can comfortably get away with since they put in "offer available in participating stores". Instead of being honest and working things out with their franchisees and customers, they have resorted to slimy tactics. Subway is one chain I'd love to watch go down like a pile of old rocks."
Fortunately I got my refund. I also saw some stories posted on Reddit when people have hard time getting back their refunds.
