They have cheap third party 40v black and decker batteries on Amazon for around $30-$40 for a pair. Work well for me.

Remember buying this for 300 7 years ago. Now it runs only for 20 mins. I would look beyond 40v. May be 60 -80v.

I bought a kit like this but it was 18v NiCd batteries. I've replaced the batteries twice, but today the trimmer/edger broke.

Feels bad replacing them when the rest of the kit works fine, but not much I can do about the cheap plastic part that broke (the part that holds the two halves together).

This doesn't appear to come with any new batteries though.

Wow. I have an old Sears Craftsman gas powered string trimmer (paid like $115) that is starting to leak after more than a decade use. It doesn't drip around but it seems to have some sort of leakage where the fuel container has some fuel on the outside. It still works but it is annoying to wipe it down after every use. When I look up the Craftsman gas string trimmer at Lowe's, it is selling for $179 and the reviews aren't that positive (3 out of 5 stars). At Home Depot, Echo and Ryobi cost like $200. Inflation stinks. No way I'm paying that. Usually I prefer gas powered but at this deal price, I am really tempted by this deal. With 4.4 out of 5 stars (2,871 reviews), I am going to get this deal. I will still probably watch youtube video and replace rubber grommet to attempt to fix my old Craftsman gas powered string trimmer.

Oh great. Now I want the Black & Decker 40V Max 22" Hedge Trimmer ($99.99 deal with a battery) or 40V Max 24" Powercommand Hedge Trimmer ($134.78 deal with a battery).

Big difference in battery life from NiCd to lithium. Lithium works way better as it holds charge longer, more power and can last many years. With NiCd, you will probably get like 2-3 years. With lithium, I am reading some people getting 7 years use. I remember having NiCd black and decker stringer and the battery died out after like 3 years. I still have the NiCd black and decker string trimmer but no way I am going to buy another NiCd battery. Same thing with NiCd Craftsman drill. My lithium battery tools perform far better.

Of course this combo set comes with a lithium battery. The other poster was just saying that his old NiCd black & decker don't come out with new company issued black & decker NiCd batteries anymore. Old dated inferior NiCd technology replaced by lithium.

Sounds like your battery is dead. Time for a new battery...not bad for 7 years.

I've had this this string trimmer for several years and have been very happy with it. For light duty maintenance cutting along the fences and borders, it has been very good.

Those cheap Amazon batteries are the way to go. I think they may even last longer than the original did.

I have this set plus a 40V max mower and a hedge trimmer, pretty much the entire line that I assembled over time by buying deals and also used market. The blower is weak but the trimmer is ok. I would probably not go with this very dated line of tools if I'm starting today.

Battery? Yes, it goes downhill after couple of years but that's no different than my friend's EGO line. It seems all such battery dies sooner then they should, probably due to lack of temperature regulation.

I bought just the string trimmer about 6 years ago for $100 on sale and I've been extremely happy with it and even gave one as a gift. It is more powerful than expected and battery is still "good enough". I usually plan what I need to use it for over 2 different days because of battery life.

FWIW... I bought the 18v version of this trimmer in 2013. Still have the same batteries (I rotate 2 of them). I use it weekly for trimming and a handful of times throughout the year for bigger stuff when needed. Ten years and no issues. If mine died yesterday, I'd probably jump on this deal, especially since it comes with the blower which would be super convenient for me.
