2230 form factor is much more expensive.
The SN740 IS 2230 form factor. It's the only one my steam deck naturally supports. What are you even on about?

Someone didn't research the model number and assumed it was 2280... Cool

I literally just bought the 1TB version. Might cancel that if I can figure out the coupon. Can anyone explain how the coupon works? Not seeing it.

edit: nevermind I found it. You have to compare buying options and it's the second one. Thanks for the good deal!

This is no different than xbox proprietary storage cards. I know I know form factor this form factor that. Still too expensive, specially considering 980 pro and sn850x 2tb being round 130-150 these days
2230 is an industry standard, and not just for the steam deck. Before the deck, it was mostly used in some Dell laptops (and maybe others). It is gaining popularity with its use in handheld gaming devices, and even the upcoming ROG Ally uses this form factor. Yes, I wish device manufacturers stuck with 2280, but this is similar to the full size SD vs micro SD debate. Eventually, everyone moves to the smaller formats whether we like it or not.

2230 uses small components than 2280. You can't compare prices directly. Smaller components are inherently more expensive to produce.
Now, the 2230s have certainly been artificially high but they won't ever be the same as a 2280.

Ouch. That is still way too expensive.

I just bought the 2TB WD SN740 from AliExpress for $140. It's working great.
I picked one up a few months ago and it's working great. Got another one for my pre order of the Asus Ally hopefully it gets in on time.

What a terrible take.

The "proprietary" storage expansion on the XBOX is a CFExpress card, which has been widely used by professional cameras long before the Series X came around.

The same goes for the 2230 form factor.

These devices are using off the shelf components, because at the end of the day they're just PCs in different housing. Yet you're talking like it's Apple.

Conparing a 2230 SSD to the Xbox expansion card is a bit unfair. That would be equivalent to the Steam Deck having an allowlist/white-list of allowed drive model numbers, like the WD CH SN530 on an Xbox. Sure, the Xbox expansion card is just an SN530 with a CFExpress connector. But imo it is proprietary given the nonstandard pinout and the software enforced allowlist.

TLDR; 2230 is expensive due to low volume of demand, Xbox expansion card is expensive due to Xbox licensing fees as it is proprietary.
