The Epson will have slightly better color and black levels from what I can tell, but thats about it. The Epson because of how it creates 4K does not have a full 4K resolution so the image will be not as crisp as compared to the Viewsonic. Also the Epson has worse input lag, since the fastest option it has is 18ms which is far slower than the 4ms of the ViewSonic. So for gaming the ViewSonic is already a better choice. The other major difference is the Viewsonic is more of a short throw projector able to produce a larger image at far shorter distances, the Epson is a traditional long throw so it will have to be way further back to get the same size image.

For the price this would be a great projector for just about anyone, unfortunately for me and probably a few others the lack of 3-D is a deal breaker so a pass for me.

Also just a head up for projector newbies. This does not have any vertical or horizontal lens shift. It does have a little optical zoom. Meaning you will need to mount it horizontally dead center of the screen and at a specific height. The zoom will allow you to have a little bit of freedom on how far away from the screen you mount it (not very much). You can use vertical and horizontal keystone correction but that degrades the image quality.

About the 3D question... There are 2 reviews and one question about it on Amazon, and yes, I made sure that it was about this model since Amazon likes to mix reviews.

One person said that the manufacturer took it back to fix it (or install the new firmware or something like that) after confirming with them over the phone that it should have 3D... they did not get it back as yet. They reviewed in October 2022

Another reviewer who reviewed in March 2023 said that the 3D feature worked out of the box with no update needed.

Originally, I had this on my eBay watch list from the official Viewsonic eBay page. Since Viewsonic had it refurbished on Amazon for a whole $100 less, I purchased that. After thinking about it for a minute, I cancelled that order and went with a new one. If 3D doesn't work, Amazon returns are easy (I try not to abuse their return policy either).

Now to get a 3D movie. to test it out when it arrives.

edit: In my deep research many many months ago, there's a certain format that the 3D movies have to be in order to view them on the projector... Don't remember too much about it since I looked at that way too long ago. I believe it's the one that flashes the images frame by frame compared to splitting it to the left/right... please don't quote me on that.

I wouldn't say 3D is dead, it evolved into VR. 3D is dead in the home market now. Can't get a 3d blu-ray anymore even though they're still coming out in theater. Can't get 3D glasses unless you look on eBay. Damn if 3D blu-ray doesn't look amazing though.

Budget projectors lack adjustability to make the product cheaper, the more you pay, the more adjustability you'll get. Some lower mid-range projectors have some vertical lens shift at least so all you need to do is line it up horizontally but then have options how far up/down you place it.

I will say these budget options are nice but also require by far the MOST amount of setup/proper placement to get them to work so it's a big drawback which sucks because majority of people who buy these never had a projector or arent projector enthusiasts necessarily so they dont know what they're getting into. Most people just just use keystone correction to get it full "Setup" which is unfortunate because the picture quality does degrade some - it doesnt ruin it necessarily just know by using keystone correction to get the projector exactly where you want you do lose some quality.

To save money. It should not be a problem if you are permanently ceiling mounting. Use projector central's throw calculator. Take a bunch of measurements. A laser level is super helpful. I got it perfect first try. Digital keystone correction also does not work in 240hz mode.

Agree this is annoying. ProjectorCentral has a model-specific calculator page [projectorcentral.com] that will show you if this will work for you in your desired mounting location

Projectors all have the same basic problems. Contrast, which makes an image look flat, poor brightness in light, lots of heat, and noise. Ive tested so many projectors. It doesnt matter the price. Yes, some are better than others in every category. But, at the end of the day, every single one is inferior to even the cheapest of televisions. You basically sacrifice everything else, for the large flat looking, dim image.

Now to answer your question:
I had this specific projector. It is a great bang for your buck. Its relatively quiet, for a projector, its relatively bright, for a projector. The image quality is relatively good, for a projector. The contrast left a lot to be desired. But, it is the same problem with all projectors no matter the price point.

Can you see the image in a room with light? Sure. Will you be straining your eyes and looking at an extremely flat image with no depth. Yes. For that reason I returned it. What is the point of a large immersive image, if you lose all depth? Takes away half the immersion.

In terms of light, the darker the room the better. and that is the problem. you will keep battling to get it darker and darker in hopes of a better image. But, watching tv in a dark room, in the middle of the day, becomes uncomfortable after a short period. and makes you sleepy after a while. Messing up your entire day/sleep cycle.

Went with three small bezel 65" tvs in portrait instead.

Looking to replace my 9 year old BenQ W1070, which I am honestly happy with but I have to imagine picture quality has gotten better. I use in a dark basement.

Only thing comparable would be something like the Optoma UHD35 which on sale has been around $999 even multiple times. No airplay you would need your own dongle for that.

Another option would be the BenQ TK700, also around that same price point.

Looking at a review from projector central which is probably THEE best review site of them all when it comes to projectors, their review list this as having no 3-D so if it indeed got 3-D it was well after the fact. Also 3-D is not mentioned anywhere in the spec sheet or on the features of the projector which also leads me to believe I was correct. Its not even on their main website and that feature would be prominently listed somewhere. Then I dove into the manual and indeed I do see in the OSD a 3-D Menu if its functional is another story....

Unless someone finds a Viewsonic press release stating and promising the feature though I would not hold my breath, and also there is no mention if they will allow a user self service firmware process so if that is the case, you will have to send it in if you get older stock.

Now as for 3-D as a media format itself, it is not dead actually quiet the opposite. In Asia just about every movie is 3-D and its the highest selling movie format. Europe also likes their 3-D, its only the USA and South America that for some reason the format is just limping along. The format is doing so well that there are tons of movies for over 10 years out scheduled to be shot in the format.

The Epson is 1080, you would want 4k at this stage of the product life cycle.
