You still have to layout the sprinkler in advance on the water days same as a programmable timer for $30.

Already using Rachio so ties in nicely in one app, and allows for rain-skip.

Now the limiting factor is the range of the wifi. I have a Zigbee smart timer system that is a pain to find useful Zigbee extenders for in the garden away (hundred of feet) from the house; some are unavailable to buy, like the Enbrighten outdoor plug-in, others don't work, like some accent lights that are listed as Zigbee capable on Amazon but upon delivery that was not the case. With just wifi it may get even harder to achieve this. And for this particular smart timer, aside from its high-ish price ($80 includes the hub, and from the Rachio website you can buy additional units for $70 without hubs), the issue is that it doesn't play nice with Alexa, Google Home or what have you, all you can use is the native app. None of these issues are dealbreakers, but they add up.
I have a few cheap AquaJoe split timers of the "dumb" kind (got them for ~$15 a piece) and they do the job. I'll be perfectly okay with just them, but the wifi does add functionality and convenience. Is it worth it to pay 10x times for the same two zones (from $15 for a 2-zone dumb timer to $80+$70 for two Rachio smart timers) for these added features? I believe everyone has to assess their specific situation and decide for themselves.
