I don't think I've had a hose bib on my last two houses where I can put something like this and not have water spraying out the top all the time. Do I just have crap hose bibs or something?

Most leaks can be fixed by replacing the packing string and washer...like 4 bucks in parts.

That would be for a leak at the handle though right? This comes out of the hose connection.

I've used the Orbit B-Hyves for a few years now, work well and cheaper than these

Oof yeah, next step would be to replace the hose washer. Those are a wear item. But if it's not that check the hose threads and spigot threads. Hose threads can be mended by cutting it off and clamping a new female on. If the spigot threads are bad you can replace the whole spigot. But if the connection is hard to get to you can also clamp on a new male attachment. Look up 'stripped faucet adapter'. All of those parts are significantly cheaper online. (Personally, I'd replace the whole spigot just to minimize connection points.)

I'm not seeing any benefit of this over a programmable timer.

You still have to layout the sprinkler in advance on the water days same as a programmable timer for $30.

Looks like the $20 clip is still available on Amazon's product page.

I'll be using this for a drip system in a newly planted area that didn't have anything there before, so it was either this or a considerably more expensive trenching and adding another zone to our in-ground.

Already using Rachio so ties in nicely in one app, and allows for rain-skip.

It is easier to give the plants additional drinks on hot dry days because you don't have to physically go to push the button or program the duration of watering on site. It is nice when you are hundreds of miles away from home to be able to do this.

Now the limiting factor is the range of the wifi. I have a Zigbee smart timer system that is a pain to find useful Zigbee extenders for in the garden away (hundred of feet) from the house; some are unavailable to buy, like the Enbrighten outdoor plug-in, others don't work, like some accent lights that are listed as Zigbee capable on Amazon but upon delivery that was not the case. With just wifi it may get even harder to achieve this. And for this particular smart timer, aside from its high-ish price ($80 includes the hub, and from the Rachio website you can buy additional units for $70 without hubs), the issue is that it doesn't play nice with Alexa, Google Home or what have you, all you can use is the native app. None of these issues are dealbreakers, but they add up.

I have a few cheap AquaJoe split timers of the "dumb" kind (got them for ~$15 a piece) and they do the job. I'll be perfectly okay with just them, but the wifi does add functionality and convenience. Is it worth it to pay 10x times for the same two zones (from $15 for a 2-zone dumb timer to $80+$70 for two Rachio smart timers) for these added features? I believe everyone has to assess their specific situation and decide for themselves.

It's a good use case for drip irrigration but not for lawn. If you leave the hose and sprinkler out for days/weeks it just weaken the blades covered by the hose/sprinkler.
