BTW - I'm stuck with a proprietary 400w HP power supply in my built-in Pavilion gaming desktop. Been using an RX 5500 paired with a Ryzen 5 5600G (came that way…) and it's ok, but I'm tempted to try the 'use an external PSU for the graphics card' hack for this slick deal 🧐 Especially since I game on an hdmi connected 75" 4k tv with friends watching/tied in on Zoom, so it can get kind of graphic intensive and lag a little during fast paced portions.

'These are all series units, the TP01, TE01, TG01, and M01. The HP PSU is proprietary. A standard (retail) ATX PSU has a 24 pin main power plug, and a 4/8 auxiliary power plug. You can not use an ATX PSU in these HP machines. It will not wire/plug into the motherboard.
If you were to trace the wiring from the existing PSU, you would see there are 2 x2 power plugs and a inline 7 pin power plug. Some PSU units also have a PCIe6 or PCIe6+2 power plug for a video card. The only 500W PSU that will work is the L05757-800, parts sites costs about $200. (They only make 180W, 310W, 400W, and 500W that work with these HP computers).'

I have an RTX 3050 and it really sucks. These rx 6600 are way faster sadly. The 3050 pulls 135w so either way he would be in the same boat.

The 3050 received a refresh in December which changed the die and lowered the maximum power rating... though without altering core counts from the die as launched at release, making distinguishing it by anything other than TDP more challenging.

Models based upon the newer die don't seem widely available, but are documented and could be a worthwhile option for those with restrictive power supplies.

For a system reliably supporting a 110W card today, and in particular one using an OEM 400W power supply (in contrast to some larger and potentially more premium unit), I'd suggest that a 30W or more difference is reasonably significant unless the system's power peak power draw and the limits of the given power supply can both be directly quantified. Put another way, I would not personally want to add the potential for more power draw to a power capacity-restricted system without knowing exactly how much available power budget was available in such a system.
