I'm not sure if they had a bad batch but check out all the recent reviews. It's cheap but maybe there is a reason. Doesn't seem like many recent purchases are resulting in many tomatoes

Not sure about this variety of cherry tomatoes -- but tomatoes in general, need pollination, which if it's indoor isn't likely to happen. Even outdoor it may not happen if you don't have any pollinators around. So you have to like use a paint brush or similar to device to brush pollen from flower to flower....

I bought their mushroom slickdeal once and I'll never buy another one again afterwards. It's a cool educational tool for the children. Other than that, it's just a waste of money.

A really expensive mason jar, seed packet, and cup of dirt?? Am I missing something magical?

Tomatoes are self pollinating. They just need to be shaken around a bit once flowering.

I grow them indoors all the time. Tiny Tim variety are great. Never do anything but keep them watered and a get tons of fruit. They self pollinate just fine.

I bought a kit in 2020 when I had a free coupon to try. Had seeds left from the kit to plant this year and all 3 I planted germinated within a week. That being said, cannot comment on current quality and germination rates of kits they are selling now.

That being said, my plant wasn't very happy growing in the jar and not sure if it had enough light to grow, even though right in front of a south facing window. I did move it outside at one point and believe it perked up. The fertilizer is easy to give as it's just a spike in the soil. I was also worried about overwatering since the jar did not have a drainage hole.

The ones I planted outside in a larger pot did very well. Used a different tomato fertilizer, too.

Overall, the seeds sprouted great for me (even 3 years later!), but I find the kits to be overly expensive and my plants have done better when planting in a bigger pot and keeping them outside on my deck.

The instructions of the kit do explain how to pollinate yourself and that it needs to be done if inside.

So... drainage hole or no drainage hole?

Exactly!
Just spread some seeds on a square of toilet paper and plant the whole tissue in a pot.

But... but... Biochar technology! How cool is that! (really, just a marketing gimmick; same with non-GMO)

Snark aside, this is educational for urban kids who think plants grow behind the store. Even those kids of the older variety. Sure, you can achieve the same results using cheaper components or with whatever you have on hand but for convenience it is hard to beat.
