I would argue this laptop is pretty solidly spec'd for this price. This would make a great everyday schoolwork/productivity machine that wouldn't annoy me. You could even get away with some light gaming, something basic to entertain while traveling. I can't quantitatively tell you the reliability of Gateway products, and I don't know what their bloatware looks like. However, on the surface, this should perform just fine. Personally, I'd opt for some kind of protection plan on top of this, and you'd be set for a few years if the above describes your intentions.

RTX 2060 6GB is faster and more VRAM. Refurb is $579 but only 8GB system RAM

also Acer Nitro 16GB with 3050Ti for $489 and $499

2-1/2+ year old refurb model, older processor, SSD half the size, less ram like you said, Win 10 which might be an issue if Windows randomly decides something is not compatible with 11, the 3050 in theory would be supported longer / have newer features than a 2060.

For me, $20 is a wise investment toward a new machine, on every front, even if the GPU might be slightly slower.

Pretty dang good weight for a laptop with a decent, albeit older, GPU.
