Yes - black just includes the restricted states on yellow. If you don't live in California, NY, or NJ, you should buy the yellow ticket instead since they're cheaper.

The AMC tickets on Costco is a total sham now in 2023. Read the comments on Costco but essentially you will pay upcharge on anything except a standard movie which brings the total paid price the same as buying directly from amc except you went through the hassle of purchasing from Costco, getting voucher codes in email, redeeming them online and bam.. Amc adds surcharges.. It used to be pretty good value pre pandemic, now its just an exercise for no savings

You can use them on the AMC website not. I know what you mean though, I used to do that with these... I'd go a day or two ahead of time "buy" the tickets and pick my seats with these but you can use both these and the gift card online now.

You've always had to pay an upcharge for 3D for these, for instance. It's still a discount. With this deal I can see a regular (digital) movie for basically $5. Even with upcharge for 3D it would be cheaper than a normal regular movie ticket.

I bought a bunch of AMC black tickets for $6 each from a site called dealstickets. They worked on the AMC website and in person at the AMC counter to redeem them. Is there any catch to this?

You are thinking of the OLD AMC tickets... AMC Gold - good for all showings, AMC Silver - good for movies that were released 14+ days ago. These were discontinued back around 2018.

The new method is to distinguish not by release date, but by state. AMC Black are more expensive and are accepted in all AMCs. AMC Yellow are less expensive, but are only accepted in AMCs outside of NY, NJ and CA.

Please note that even for standard showings, some locations (ex. all Manhattan AMCs) require an additional surcharge (1.50 per ticket, last I looked, may have changed). There are additional surcharges for 3D, 4D, IMax, etc.

ALSO... most annoyingly... using these Black/Yellow tickets do NOT earn you any AMC reward points!! (Using the gift card will, of course.)

Finally, most AMCs have a Tuesday special. Discount tickets (if you buying at the theater, sometimes you have to ask for the discount) for AMC Stubs members (free). Depending on where you are a Tuesday discount ticket might be $5, 6, or $7.50. Definitely cheaper than regular price and cheaper than even these tickets.
