Can someone who knows these things explain why one is 3x the price of the other if they're both 10x42? That part is all I know. Thanks.

The clarity of the glass is probably the biggest thing. Others who know more can elaborate

Optics quality is far superior on the Viper. Crossfire is their entry level line…at least on their scopes it is.

As others have said, the difference is the quality of the optics. But it goes way beyond the quality of the glass and includes the quality of the lens coatings. The glass covers overall clarity, while the coatings govern brightness. Bare lenses want to reflect a percentage of the light hitting them (there are a few lenses in binocs) reducing brightness. The coatings reduce those reflections letting more light reach your eye. The better the lens coatings the more light that reaches you. I've tried both and own older Vipers. Note that 10x is about the limit of what most people can hold study enough to really see well.

BTW: I used to sell hunting optics.

It may depend on how you would be using them. 10x will give you a smaller field (the area you're looking at) vs 8x42. If you need to see very specific details then you may prefer these. I do agree they will be heavier so holding up to your eyes could be uncomfortable for extended periods of time, like an entire football game. Check the weights in the descriptions. Also check to see if they are water resistant. Especially important if you plan to be in dampness or rainy season. I agree with the other comments here.
