Jeez this thread is grim. I just got back from 2 weeks in Taipei and had some of the best foods in my life. Ate at some Michelin breakfast spot for $6, Uber was under $10 a ride to get anywhere. The subway was easier to use than NYC. Exchanged $300 for food/drinks/exploring and it lasted me & wife the whole two weeks including drinking at bars every night. I even got new prescription eyeglasses at this place that did it all in 20 mins. Booked my own car with driver for 10 hours for $100 to visit the more rural areas, this was the highlight. Highly recommended!

i saw that. it was due to crosswinds. better safe than sorry.

it was overnight at narita airport. everyone affected got full refunds and were provided sleeping bags, water and snacks. i wouldn't mind spending the night at narita and getting ramen or bento box.

The direct delay was about 7 hours only, not days.
It's caused by strong cross wind. After a few failed landing attempts, the flight landed on the alternative airport. When it finally reached the destination airport, it's 7 hours late. No immigration staff was on duty at late night. No transfer flight could take off at late night. Therefore passengers were stranded in the airport until next morning.
Starlux is a new small airlines with few airplanes. The delay of the flight caused cascaded delays.

any good flight deals for flying to Seoul?
We just flew the new Korean airline Air Premia, for $760 RT from LA to Incheon! 2 good meals each way, coffee and water is free. 2 free checked bags each and a carry on. The legroom in Coach is insane, the old lady on the aisle could stay seated when I went to the restroom! Nice new 787 Dreamliners with sweet screens and you could dim the windows all the way, instead of pulling shades..
OH and the exchange rate is crazy good right now, 1300-1400 WON per $ is SWEET! Most everything is CHEAP! We got a 32nd floor studio in a fancy Hapjeong highrise for $100/night all in, on a Korean Airbnb site. It had 2 awesome Han River views and a rainhead shower with a door. (Not a wet bathroom floor, which is common in Asia)
The Blue House (the Korean Whitehouse) is now open to the public for FREE, best to get a reservation..

How did you book a car with driver? Is there a company that provides this?
Still getting over the jet lag but like someone else mentioned, I used this app called Klook. It was like Asia's Expedia. I figured it was safe as I even saw ads on it in the subway

What was the name of the Michelin spot? Also where did you go rurally that you'd recommend?
Fuhang Soy Milk was the spot. I also went to Keelung City, Shifen, Juifen and Houtong Cat Village

Dude, how did $300 last you 2 weeks? Isn't Taipei is expensive especially bars every night? Are you sure you are not exaggerating?
$300 was strictly for food and drinks. Most bars I went to were about 100-200NTD for a gin & tonic or draft beer. As for hotels I used points

I had been Taibei many times before pandemic, it is not cheap place than other south Asian destinations ( such as Bangkok, Manila etc.). $300 can last for two days if you live in less than two-star hotel
I just got back from Taiwan 2 days ago. Firstly, it's Taipei, not Taibei. Although it's technically pronounced Tai Bei in Mondrian. I stayed in a clean ass 3 star hotel in Tai-Chung for $90 a day. Had a separate tub and shower along with free breakfast. Its called the "Stay Hotel." Yes this was in Tai Chung so I can't comment on Tai Pei prices. But I took a 30 min Uber ride in Tai Pei to Tai Pei 101 for $10! I took multiple Ubers in Tai Peit for $5-15. Everything is cheap AF compared to the US. If you make at least 50K you'll feel rich!

At the street vendors, we ate breakfast for 3 for $9! Lunch and dinner can be had for $10 or less. At more upscale locations near Taipei 101, we ate for 4 for $100. Note $100 is for quality fresh seafood and multiple alcoholic drinks, which would have cost double in the US.

Also note that only capital one and Discover have zero international transaction fees. Therefore, you must exchange cash to be safe. I took $1000 USD, exchanged to 30,000 NTD for 3 weeks and it lasted with $100ish left over.

I am originally from Taiwan but left at 5 years old. This is not a poor country. You'll see rich ass ppl and multiple Bimmers and Teslas and numerous skyscrapers etc. Everything is cheaper than anywhere in the US, except realestate. An 800sq feet 1 bed, 1 bath apartment in Taipei will cost about $600k. Food is excellent. Make sure to visit night markets with street food vendors. You can numerous things for $1 or $2 USD.

You can try Klook or KKDay app. They've got tons of private driver deals. I used it during my South Korea and taiwan trip this year and both were flawless. The drivers spoke pretty good English too.

Tip: Use the same apps to get a portable wifi egg. It was like $2-3 per day for unlimited 4g. Worked well in 99% of the places I visited and was good enough to upload/download pics while on the road until I got back to my hotel wifi. Pick up at the airport and drop them off at the airport too. Very convenient and dirt cheap.
You can get a one month unlimited prepaid sim at the airport for $1000NT from CHT (ChungHwa Telecom, one of the major carriers there) which is about $30 USD.

Sounds like some place I should consider moving to. I've been thinking about it, being single and all. Maybe 3 month trial.
Why? You think that there are lots of single women just waiting to meet you? Maybe Cambodia would be a better choice.

This is true of the special Tourist SIM cards with unlimited data, but if you get a regular SIM card you can get 30 days for $999NT where the first 60GB is at 5G (and over that is capped at 10Mbps).
