I've got one of these a few years ago. Is it a $1000 bench? No. Is it a good value for $149. It is pretty much as advertised. My top split a bit after a year but that's the only issue it has had. Drawer guides are only about 1/2 depth but that's the only complaint. Are you going to use it to build cabinets on? No. I do misc assembly on that bench and can't fault it. It's a good value at that price and if you don't have a bench, it's 100X better than no bench.

SJOBERGS makes some of the best workbenches for woodworkers and they are 100% wooden.

As a woodworker you want a bench that will not damage or mar what you are working on, so no metal tops.

I assume original question was not "wood or metal, but "would a woodworker buy a bench or make their own?"
My bet most woodworkers are not rich enough to afford the rate they would change to themselves...

You are correct. Most people I know either buy a bench (cheap or expensive) or make a down and dirty quick 2x4 and plywood bench specially designed for projects.

The few who make a quality bench do it to challenge themselves as a personal project.

Have owned the 4 drawer model for a decade. The clamp seized once and I fixed it. Otherwise, been invaluable as a small work space for everything from printmaking to small soldering, staining and sanding projects, sharpening station and sewing bench. Can't fault it, and at $150 I think it's a steal, since you don't need to put time in to build one. (And lumber these days is not cheap.)

As a hobbyist, this rocks.

Though I don't think it's a slickdeal per se, since I think this is the usual standard price.

Or, a woodworker could maybe just build their own.

The wood alone, not even counting the hardware for the vice and all, is easily double the price of this. Also ignoring the time investment cost for a woodworker to build this.
The only reason to build a bench now is to challenge yourself to do it, or you have a custom need.

...or maybe to build one that won't start falling apart after year.
