I got this.

I am planning to activate, make a test call, go to the Verizon store and pay it off, and then port out the number to Tello to cancel the line. All on the same day.

From what I understand the phone should auto unlock in 60 days. Also I should most likely be refunded for my activation and first month charge. Right?
No. the unlock is a gamble
Quote from jefferyh :
This is from the Verizon website:

Beginning on 7/23/2019, devices purchased from Verizon are locked for 60 days from the date of purchase. This policy applies to new and existing customers, postpaid and prepaid plans and customers porting their service to another carrier.

Please see examples below for more information:
*Device purchased at full retail price or on a device payment agreement – Locked for 60 days from purchase
*Device purchased on a device payment agreement and paid off prior to 60 day requirement – Locked for 60 days from purchase
*Customers porting out service – Device remains locked until 60-day requirement has been met
*Verizon service canceled while device is locked – Device remains locked until 60-day requirement has been met
*Prepaid customers – Locked for 60 days from purchase

So it does appear if you pay it off and port the line out immediately, it will still unlock after 60 days. Not sure about getting the activation fee and first month service charge refunded though.
Their website don't mean anything. They can deny unlock.

stop spreading information you are not 100% sure of.

it is NOT a gamble since you completely pay the phone off. It will get unlocked after 60 days, I have done this myself.
some have had luck getting it done early by calling and explaining that it is paid off already and you need it for travel, but that, I would say is more of a gamble.

I agree with Myst3ryx... I have also taken additional lines from Verizon and it automatically unlocks after 60 days. There is no gamble there.

What if you cancel the service before the 60 days are done? Would you call that a gamble?

You're not going to be able to buy this phone for $200. The price is after monthly bill credits. If you try to pay it off you'll still be paying full retail. The reason they're able to sell it for $200 is because they're making money off of you for 36 months.
Do not spread information you are not 100% sure of. this is false. Some places, like Verizon themselves and Best Buy do it this way, but Walmart does not. Like others here, I have done this myself, and can confirm first-hand. There is no mention of bill credits on any page

You can pay this phone off for $200, and be done with it.

As long as the phone gets paid off, then no Gamble. If you pay it off before cancelling, you'll be fine. If you still have remaining balance, it will a part of your final prorated bill. but at that point I'm not certain if the 60 days resets or not (likely does).

You still need to pay activation and the first month's service, right? Were you able to do this without that (or ended up getting those refunded)?

I WAS able to get those refunded, I did not pay activation, nor any prorated/first month charges! The ideal way, is You need to pay off the phone, and cancel within 3 days of activation to get refunded everything. When you call to cancel, reconfirm you will get the refund for safe measure, and specify you want to cancel the line immediately (otherwise it will run until end of first month).

information can be found ON THIS PAGE [verizon.com]
"You may terminate service for any reason within 30 days of activation. You will remain responsible for your Activation Fee unless you terminate service within three days of activation."

Thanks! Very helpful. One more question - can you pay it off online, or does that need to be done in a store? I assume you can at least cancel by calling in (within 3 days)?

How do you pay off the phone? Is it done online or what?

How come they don't let you see what plans are available before you give your ssn#, that page?
