you don't have to drive to lax for a cheap flight (btw, that deal is still live) to tokyo!
United Airlines and Travelocity have limited round trip airfares travelling from Phoenix (PHX) to Tokyo Japan (HND or NRT) for $637 or $687, making 1 stop. The airfare range depends on the date you choose. I posted 2 screenshots of each of the fares. These are economy, nonchangeable fares that include a personal item, a carry-on bag and 2 free checked bags. When you book this, be aware of the airport in Tokyo as it could be both or either/or.
Travel Availability:
Departs PHX: Nov 1, 21, 28, 29; Dec 5; Jan 16-17, 22, 27, 30
Returns: Nov 21, 28-29; Dec 4-5, 7, 11-13, 18-20; Jan 20, 22-24, 27, 29; Feb 1, 3, 5-6
To book this deal, use dates and book flights with
Travelocity [travelocity.com] or United Airlines.

I'm thinking if you travel northern Japan, you may be able to see leaves in pretty fall colors. However, it has been warmer and warmer in Japan, in general, so leaves may change colors sooner than usual time. I am currently in Japan and have experienced 2 typhoons since last week. Typically, typhoon season is fall. My mother said it's due to the warmer weather.

That's not to say you can't have a good time then. But you'll need to plan around it because many of the sites and attraction you want to see might be closed. Cool time to visit temples and shrines, though.
Ironically, Christmas can be a great time to visit Japan. Because while they do celebrate it, it's not a religious holiday for most, more of a time for parties and get togethers.
ANA is top of the line as far as I'm concerned.
