Buying from Samsung charges tax on the full price of the device. Picking up from BB B&M only charged tax on the $250. YMMV but worth a try.

No free memory upgrade to 512gb. With regular offer at 512GB free upgrade, it is $427 with education discount comparing to $449, hence not good deal for 512GB version. But good deal for 256GB.
The biggest upgrade is the 8gen2. I own both s22u and s23u, the s22u is constantly a hot potato while s23u is at most warm under heavy load. Other than the processor, the battery life is a huge improvement. At $200 difference probally it makes sense to upgrade but not over that.
They ship you your new phone with packing material. Some soft sheeting and a lot of cardboard that is long, shredded like a pair of 80s jeans, rolled up on the new phone. A fedex return label will be inside. You will need to tape it to the outside of the box, on top of the original label (or remove the original label and apply new one).

Get your new phone up and running first. Look for any issues for a week.

Do a factory reset on your old phone. take a picture of the screen with your new phone to show no issues of front and back while on. In case Samsung employee tries to pull a fast one on you.

Turn your old phone off and wrap it up. You can dop off at any Fedex drop off location or find a Dollar General store. They will scan the package and send a receipt notice via text to your phone. Samsung will receive a couple business days later and let you know they receive. Few more days until they get a chance to review and ok the trade-in.

I would be in for an S23U at $200-250 total but paying tax on the full amount and going over $300 feels like more than I'm willing to do.

However, the battery on my S22U is bad enough that I might just have to bite the bullet... I'll see if I can make it to Black Friday.

With various discounts I have the S23 Ultra 256GB in my cart, upgrading/trading from S22 Ultra, for $246 with a clear case (no tax). Is that a slick deal vs the 512 GB (12GB RAM) at $400? Will I have any regrets at not springing for the latter? Most seem to think the RAM issue is negligible, and that's the only thing I'm concerned about (not storage).

I traded in my fold 4 to get the s23 ultra at $249. I was not a fan of the fold 4, i like the camera, battery life, s pen of the ultra, in a traditional phone better.

I am really debating this. I love my fold but am thinking of going back to a traditional design. One of the things I do all the time with my fold is watch videos. Do you find that the screen is about the same size when viewing horizontally? The square aspect ratio of the open Fold 4 makes me think that I wouldn't miss anything going to the Ultra. TIA.

Yes it's about the same size viewing horizontally, i don't miss the fold 4 at all. Also i like using my phone with one hand, which meant that it's hard to use the fold open. And when closed the outer screen is so thin it's annoying to use the keyboard or use certain apps like Instagram without everything looking stretched vertically. And honestly i don't really multitask so it doesn't really matter to me. Im typing this on the s23 ultra, and it's much more pleasant and easier to type on the keyboard.

Repped! Thanks for the comment and feedback. I think I'm going to switch too.

Late in jumping on this thread. In NJ for the s23U with 256GB I see $374.99 ($25 for first purchase) + $24.80 tax with BB pickup = ~$400 on Samsung shop app with S21ultra trade in. Is that the best offer as of today?

Same old shenanigans from Samsung. Got excited for a second when i saw the new $1000 trade in price for my S22 Ultra for the new Galaxy Fold5/ Flip5. As soon as I got to the checkout page my $270 edu discount magically lowered itself to $120 instead...
You want a discount on the $1000 you're not paying?

I have s22+ and was thinking of trading , but not really in mood to backup and setup phone again - will wait longer
I was surprised that the Samsung app installs everything from the old phone, all apps and most settings. Lots easier than I expected.
