Good gift for a 13 year old boy? (barmitzva). He likes music, but never played any instruments before. I figured it would look cool in his room, even if he does not learn to use it. Thoughts?

Even if all he does is play the intros to Come as You Are, Enter Sandman, and Owner of a Lonely Heart over and over again, it's still a lot of fun. Smilie

If you want to go electric, be sure to budget $75-$200 for an amplifier…or look for a combo kit like the Squier Stratocaster bundles. I have one and love it, even after 30 years of playing. There's something to be said for never worrying about breakage, resale, or theft. And it still plays about 90% as well as a premium guitar.

Out of the guitars available currently, I would give him the JS32Q DKA HT (Transparent Black Burst). Reason being it doesn't have a tremolo to fiddle with, which can be frustrating for beginners - unless he is super passionate about having a guitar with a tremolo and loves music that utilizes one. Just my 2 cents

JS32Q is wonderful beginner's guitar. Ideally, you'd pay $350 for a guitar with proper tuners and a nicer finish, but for $199 is gets your foot in the door, and tuners can be replaced.

These are high gain pickups made for driving amps to distortion for rock and metal. They are good pickups for this price range. The necks are super nice. The body finish is poor, but I bought a JS32 to be a workhorse I wouldn't mind throwing in a trunk.

What is the cheapest I can go to hear myself play? I have an electric guitar that was given to me and I want to learn to play but I have a lot of hobbies I fall off from. I would rather go cheap and invest more later. I want to be able to just hear myself, but not have my neighbors hear me or they will all grab pitch forks and kill me.

Are you asking about amps? If so Boss Katana Mini for $100 is a pretty good deal. Spark Go for $129 is also pretty good if you want to explore tones with simulated pedals.

https://www.amazon.com/NUX-Headph...d=11968271 Would something like this be okay if I just want to hear myself and practice at first? I have a lot of people living near me. I have the DT900 headphones to use. I don't want to spend a lot until I know I am going to get into it.

It would probably work. Amazon has a pretty good return policy. Honestly cheapest solution would be playing it without and amp. It would just be a quiet acoustic guitar. I play this way all the time at night with my electric guitar. Bothers no one and you can still clearly hear the notes. With guitar equipment I tend to recommend to stay away from crappy amps, usually sounds tinny. Nothing turns you off from playing like hearing crap.

Honestly just get a cheap audio interface and listen via the pc. there are some better phone solutions out there though but vary a ton.
