Official Hifiman Sundara CLOSED-BACK
$229 free shipping

you can delete the other thread if nobody likes how i posted itbe aware this isn't the open-back version. and this posting isn't even an open-box.
but there are mixed reviews on the CLOSED-BACK version of the headphones and many quality control issues reported.
people tend to like to open-back ones, but some like these too.

And Amazon has Hifiman official 3rd party seller...does that meet the requirements to post? I got downvoted for posting that. That one is open-box for $219 plus tax. But better return policy possibly.Anyways it's possible all of these might even be brand new anyways. At the very least is open box.

No? Should I post Amazon buy box for $229?These retail for $399 and this is the lowest price posted on slickdeals and possibly ever from official retailer with warranty.Hifiman official website no tax, free shipping.

Ok 3 upvotes. Hopefully i'm explaining clearly. I'm trying to post a great deal, but the Amazon one may or may not be brand new or open box (when you click Used - Like New sold and shipped by Hifiman), but Hifiman removed their open-box product page on their official website and now discounted the brand new one even lower. These were posted at $249 recently as a deal.
I've been reading about people saying they received them and was brand new as far as they could tell.

But I had to return a pair of sundara *open-back* from Hifiman official and the quality control everywhere i read online talks about it's a gamble. but the Amazon listing (even the Used- Like New) has Hifiman warranty.
There's mixed reviews on this *closed-back* version. Multiple people have said they don't sound the same as the open back, like it has different audio drivers. And someone wrote that the wood piece fell off when they dropped it and only had a few spots of glue.

There's great reviews on Hifiman headphones, but you might want to get it with the warranty from official retailer.

(oh, I was told also that posting Amazon 3rd party, the specific item didn't quite meet the number of Amazon product reviews for the minimum requirement, but i reported to have delete the post anyways)

Same price on Amazon [amazon.com] (shipped by Amazon but sold by HIFIMAN which may be better in terms of any returns especially with the reviews on poor quality of this particular model). Also note that buying direct on their website you are only limited to using PayPal as a form of payment.

or click under "Used - Like New" sold and shipped by Hifiman through Amazon
for $219 plus tax
is quite possibly the same exact stock

It's probably an open-box item, or even brand new, with the same 1 year Hifiman warranty

Hifiman official website also has a return policy (when buying through the website) and also should cover return shipping if it's defective.

Would you go with these or the AKG K371 for some hobbyist monitoring and e-drum playing?

Hifiman realized their mistake and prob tryna get rid of them, originally these were supposed to be more exp than the Sundara, ironically now is cheaper than sundara because they just dont sound good. These will prob sell to modders who want to play w/ them, but if you want something that sounds good out of the box just get the sundara.

They ship fast. But wow if they ever have quality control issues.Left/Right balance is a bit off

It's not so much of a closed-back that it seals sound off completely. Sounds kind of like the open-back Sundara to me, but I'm not comparing it side by side.

At this point, I would steer clear of the Hifiman if you want reliable headphones. Customer service is great, but ends up being necessary.
I'm still comparing brands. I don't know much about AKG.

I picked these up anyway based on the handful of reviews I was able to find. TLDR: they are fine and I will probably keep them.

Sound Quality - They sound incredibly mediocre. Maybe a bit overdone in the upper-lows or low-mids. For closed headphones, that is somewhat good news, as they normally have some more glaring flaws. Detail and timbre is also middle of the road. They remind me of my general impressions of the Phillips SHP9500S which I think is highly overrated but not bad. Compared to other headphones, these just take a bit of life out of the music, and I found myself going through test tracks as work rather than the fun exploration with other headphones.

Volume Level - One of the reasons they caught my eye, they are pretty easy to drive. They sound relatively similar out of my cellphone or my THX AAA 789. They should be fine out of my drums.

Fit/Comfort - They are very large. The pads are soft but not like Audeze pads, they feel cheaper, which they likely are. They are also very lightweight compared to similarly sized headphones or other planar magnetics. They are maybe a little warm to wear. The suspension strap feels cheap but is not an issue. Adjustment range seems above average, I normally am on the smallest or a couple clicks off smallest, I'm three off the smallest setting on these and it looks like they go quit a bit larger. The cable is bad, similar to a Grado; it feels cheap, the dimensions are weird (the Y is comically long), and oddly it has a 3.5mm right-angle with a pressure fit 1/4" adapter.

Style - They look pretty nice, the photos online give a near-perfect representation. I'm not a fan of the stain but they don't look cheap.

Value - At $230 these are a good value despite not excelling in any category, mostly because I can't think of any closed circumaural headphones near that price that don't have worse flaws.

Competition - I would be interested to hear a direct comparison to the Beyerdynamic DT 700 Pro X ($259), the AKG K371 ($169), and the Sony mdr7509/V6 ($90). For on ears, the Audeze Sine are far better, but they require the special Cipher DSP cable or EQ+amp. For IEMs, the Fanmusic TRUTHEAR x Crinacle Zero are way more enjoyable and at $43 right now, I would assume Zero:RED are an even better sound at $55 based on their relative tuning. The Massdrop+ were around $300, and are leagues better than the Sundara Closed.

For reference, the headphones I use most - Stax L300 Limited (modded), Audeze LCD 2 Classic, Massdrop+, Audeze iSine 20 w/ BT Cipher, Sennheiser HD650, Audeze Sine w/ Cipher

After quite a bit of research, I finally bought Beyerdynamic Dt 770 Pro open box for $100 on eBay. I was between those and Audio Technica ATH-M50X.
