Has nothing to do with reversing connection with factory wiring...

More to do with idiots reversing when jump starting.

Can I use new Vaseline or does it have to be used Vaseline?

Easy visual reference positive and ground for those with those are "less" mechanically inclined.

Or...

"place the felt on each battery post. no room for error since they are both the same and wont cause any confusion in regards to polarity (since its a piece of cloth)."

Most modern vehicles make it impossible to reverse the polarity by limiting the length of the movable section of the battery wire, so it's usually not necessary unless you have something pretty old or custom wiring.

Aren't these only good if the post is leaking acid? I use dielectric grease or CRC protector spray. Vaseline melts and runs, IME.

I also use CRC cleaner with acid indicator when I clean up the terminals and battery posts and have been lucky lately with no indications of post leakage.

You are assuming I didn't screw it up and installed the battery in the wrong way and now + and - are inverted

i wanted to do this on purpose because the reversed polarity battery of the same physical dimensions as mine was a bunch cheaper; as the other poster said, the cables were too short to allow this even with the battery installed backwards.

Unless you use jumper cables.
