I have the Bear Grylls-branded version of this Gerber manufactured knife. Based on what I've read, it's the exact same knife except this one has a much less obnoxious color scheme than my BG version. For the money it's very good value. There are better options out there, but they cost more. It's not quite full tang but I've had no problem using the pommel as a crude hammer, or batonning wood.

The steel could be better. It takes a very fine edge, but dulls rather quickly under heavy use. The sheath, firesteel and whistle (orient it vertically against your lips, not horizontally) are quite good. The integrated diamond hone is pretty coarse - it'll give you a utility-grade edge at best. And nearly worthless on the serrated portion of the blade.

I really like the sheath. It provides good retention and has multiple mounting options to attach to your belt or backpack. And there are plenty of places where I was able to squirrel away a button compass, multiple band-aids, bug repellant towelettes, water purification tablets, a bit of cordage and a keychain flashlight.

I also wrapped the handle with paracord. Partly for the extra cordage, but candidly, to tone down the Bear Grylls branding. Wink

The only desireable Bear Grylls feature this Gerber-branded version doesn't have is a fold out survival guide that slots into a little pocket on the back of the sheath. It's made of some sort of waterproof, nigh near indestructible plasticky paper.

Edit: FWIW, I used the knife lanyard to secure both the whistle and the firesteel to the sheath. To eliminate any possibility of losing the firesteel, and to get the whistle out of the way when using the knife. Hope this info is useful to someone.
