I don't know anyone that knows up front what things are going to cost until the get the bill and even then it often doesn't make sense. I don't buy anything else like that, why should our health care be this way? Just my two cents.
This aspect of medical care in America drives me insane. And the bills can keep coming for months. They should have like 3 or 6 months to bill you and then that's it. And you should be able to get an estimate no later than 48 hours after care so you at least have some idea if it was a $50 problem or a $5000 problem.

My typical 2 day hospital stay costs well over $100,000. You're going to pay $5000 a night just for the room. When I think about it, I'm sure that my medical expenses have been way more than a million this year. And let's not forget the pharmacy costs. A 30 day supply of one of my heart drugs can cost over $500. Multiply that by how many drugs I have to take and my drug bill is $50,000 to $100,000 for the year.

Ok, now for the serious reply. My medical bills are over a million dollars this year and I'm a hopeless case. Maybe they can keep me alive for another 5 years but my quality of life will be zero. I feel like the money they spent on me would be better spent on someone younger who has their whole life in front of them and can get better. If you try to say this to your doctor, they'll take you away on suicide watch. I wouldn't want someone to tell me that I can't have treatment but I'd like to be able to say when it's time to stop and to let whatever happens happen.
I know what you mean. My quality of life has gone way down hill the past eight years or so and will not get any better. Continue to get worse until I probably won't be able to care for myself at all; that is if I'm even able to breath by then. But heaven forbid if I would say this out loud to my doctor. I'd probably be locked up. I personally advocate for assisted suicide and being able to die with dignity on one's own time frame. Don't have a problem with regular suicide either. Again, it all comes down to choice as far as I'm concerned.

Also, I don't know the rules of each state but there are things called DNR orders. I believe that would at least put an end to all codes as well as other interventions if you opted at some point to go that way.

Take care. Hope your weekend goes well!

I'm asked all of the time about DNR but I don't want that. I might think that I do now but I wouldn't want it when the time came. I'm a big chicken. I've tried to talk honestly with my doctors a few times and it's always a mistake. They pop out the depression test and then you have to lie on that. I want to get treatment for my shortness of breath because it would greatly improve my quality of life if I didn't feel like I was always going to pass out but I wonder why I had the prostate surgery. It made everything worse and I've gone through a month of agony (or two months if you count the cystoscopy).

This is such a difficult topic. On most issues I am hard left, but I do have to admit that I generally like my healthcare. However, I'm a lucky one. I have always had good medical insurance and I have lived in the Northeast and the Mid Atlantic, where there are plenty of doctors and hospitals. I had a very serious condition as a child, and I used to brag to my husband that I could go to any medical facility and get immediate treatment because of my history. (Kind of like White Privilege, but this is Medical Privilege.) That isn't as extreme as it used to be, but, for example, if I wanted an antibiotic, I would get it. If I wanted an appointment, I would get it. Now, luckily, I think care has evened out a bit and most people in this area of the USA get decent care.

Anyway, I obviously don't know what the answer is. Probably there need to be a lot more nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians' assistants, etc. And also more home health aids and hospital aids for older people. (A big aside but we need mandatory service, maybe between high school and college, so there are more people who have to do crappy jobs.)

If Biden calls me up and hires me, I will put my all into figuring this out, but it's a very complicated issue.

I tend to disagree but I respect your opinion as well. I know many folks that have waited six months or longer for non-emergency surgeries, procedures, etc., here in the US. I live in 'the med city' (where Mayo Clinic is located) and long waits tend to be the norm. I wouldn't even consider going to the ER there - many folks walk out after waiting more than a day to be seen. It often depends on where one lives, population, number of doctors, case load, etc. While I have no problem paying for health care and insurance and even taxes for that matter (everyone, everywhere pays one way or the other), my wish is that everyone could be treated the same and know what things are going to cost before having them done. I often hear a commercial for a group that helps those 'get out of'' a time share contract and it states that owning a time share is like giving someone a blank check forever. Except for the forever part, this is what I feel our health care industry is. I don't know anyone that knows up front what things are going to cost until the get the bill and even then it often doesn't make sense. I don't buy anything else like that, why should our health care be this way? Just my two cents.
I have always been lucky to have great medical insurance and have never had to wait for service for non emergency procedures. In spite of that, I loved the idea of national healthcare to help everyone until several things called to my attention how difficult it can be. Overall, I really don't disagree with you, but I do absolutely have new found reservations about national healthcare. That was intended to be my key point.

I have cousins who live in Scotland who I reconnected to about three years ago. One has currently been waiting on surgery for over a year. Lucky for her, her situation is not as bad as my friend's husband. By comparison, if I needed the same surgery, it would have likely taken less than six weeks for me to be approved and have the surgery.

My childhood friend and I reconnected about 18 months ago. She lives in London, so it's not like she's in a medical desert, yet getting the most basic of care is never easy. I also have cousins in Canada who tell similar negative stories about national healthcare. Among other things, this has caused a pause to an idea my husband and I had to move to the UK.

I completely agree with you about not knowing how much healthcare is going to cost. I had a procedure several years ago and did receive an estimate before they did it. I was told that the costs would NOT go above the estimate. Well, you guessed it, the costs did go above the estimate. Frown

Even our vet can give me an estimate for surgery on my dog with a low and high end estimate. When we had my dog's teeth cleaned and another issue came up, the vet called me to confirm which direction to go since it might change the estimate.

Vet care is a whole other issue. It's like dental care, in that a lot of times you really don't know if something has to be done or not. I think with medical care they kind of have to be more honest because they can be sued easily. Dental and medical seems like a free for all though.

We go to an old-school multi-vet office. The older vets don't seem to recommend anything that isn't necessary, but sometimes they do refer you to a high-tech fancy vet and then the sky is the limit. They're also hiring new younger vets. It's good that the place will stay in business, but I like old vets who have seen everything.

Interesting and comforting that we all feel basically the same way about health care:
We want it to be easy and not too expensive to get great healthcare for ourselves and our families
and we want the same for everybody else, especially in this country. Just that no one really knows how to get to that point.

I ordered my coupons from Jack's on Tuesday and paid for priority mail w/insurance. They were delivered today. Can't ask for more. I wasn't expecting to have them in time for RA's Sunday ad but now I will.

There's a big problem with the Pantene deal at RA this week. It's on sale for $5.99 and spend $30 and get $10 Bonus Cash. At CVS, this would be a typical deal that they run 100 times a year. Pick up 5 bottles and get the $10 but at RA you have to actually hit $30 ($29.95 doesn't cut it) so you need to buy 6 bottles. RA, why do you do this? Just when we're starting to love you. It's insulting.

I'm also wondering if Pantene is part of the P&G deal and not it's own deal. Then the $5.99 price would make more sense. I'm not sure how to check to see if it is other than by buying a Pantene and a P&G sale item and looking at the tracking. Maybe there's a way to do it online but ever since they changed things it's been a lot more difficult to figure out what's going on.

I also have a complaint about Olay body wash. Last week they had tags up that said new low price but a few days later they pulled them and raised the price back up. They raised the price on Duracell and Listerine right before last week's ad, too. It's not what I would call playing fair. I appreciate the great deals RA is giving me and the deals are still great even with the price increase but it just seems wrong to raise the price right before the sale.

Pantene is part of the P&G deal at RA. There's no way that I know of to tell from the store tags or website so I took a chance and bought one with my P&G order.

Here's a run deal but it's a ymmv. Rimmel is on clearance at some stores for 75% off which puts it around $1.25. Buy 3 and get $10 BC. Use it as part of your 15/50 deal. I don't know if the $2 L2C's worked. Everything was crazy and I didn't have time to check my receipts. I went to 2 stores today. One was full price and one was 75% off. It's probably not going to be tagged so you'll have to price check.

All your talk of RA does most of us no good, as we don't have them. Frown

Well, chat away here on your RA escapades then. I understand how some personalities here can be a bit much. And by here, I don't mean this thread, but SD in general.
I want to chase the Rimmel deal tomorrow but all of my RA's are 30 minutes apart so the gas cost ($6.29 a gallon) kills that idea. I'm pissed at myself for not testing Pantene sooner (rookie mistake). I wish that I felt better because I was on a pretty good roll today but I can't get rid of this headache. I'll go to CVS on Wed when my CG coupons get here. It could be a big day if CVS wants to be nice to me again. I just hope that I can stay out of the hospital this week. That's my #1 goal.

Pretty sure RA offers no complete list anywhere of what's included in a BC offer, but the way I try to figure it out is by doing a pretend online order. It worked just now when I tried it--5 Pantenes showed I'd earn $0 BC, but when I added a Tide, it showed $10. May not be infallible, though. I tried to figure out that way whether Degree was part of last month's Unilever deal, and it didn't seem to be, but I was happily surprised when I bought some anyway. Tonight I noticed that it didn't work if the cart contained a mix of ship and pickup items. I can't remember well enough to be sure, but since I didn't know that when I was trying to figure out Degree, that may be why it didn't work for me then.
