If you have a old or cheap dishwasher then expensive detergent may work better, but if you have a decent dishwasher the house brand packs clean just fine.

Sam's has had the Finish Quantum pods as cheap as 15-16c per pod in a 100 pack. Non-sale price was around 18c, and currently it's showing as 20c per pod. Not a bad deal, but not great. I'd consider this if I were completely out and needed pods asap. Don't know how well these clean compared to Quantum, but the Quantum's are comparable to Cascade Platinum in my experience.

The more advanced packs have added chemicals for baked on messes, whitening, etc. I used to think that the separate components were just a gimmick, but a dishwasher expert told me that there are two reasons to keep the various chemicals separate. First, certain chemicals don't mix well. For example, bleach will destroy the enzymes (lipase for fat, amylase for starches, and protease for proteins). And second, the more advanced packs have components that that are released at different stages in the wash cycle. Chemicals that are released later have a thicker membrane that dissolves slower.
