Bought this last month for my daughter who is not old enough for a phone but we needed a way to keep track of her in the neighborhood and be able to call her. We are an Apple household, so I set it up on my phone but for a child, which allows me to set parental restrictions on who she can call/text and when it goes into school time mode (which can be required by teachers when they're at school). Basically makes it into a watch.

I'm with T-Mobile and they have a $10 basic plan for watches and with an auto pay discount it knocks it down to $5 a month.

When I was researching other "kids" watches with calling ability, there were some that were a little cheaper (Gab, etc) but the savings on the watch would have been offset by the plans ($15/mo).

As some have mentioned, this is basically a series 4 watch, so it should be fine with regards to updates for the OS for a while.

Definitely not in the e-waste category.
This is two years newer than the Series 4, which is still supported. So, I suspect that this will still get another few rounds of OS updates.

Also, even the unsupported versions maintain their functionality. I have a Series 3, and I still use it for fitness tracking, messaging, 2FA, etc.

Careful- I bought the non-Nike version that was an FP deal last week. The listing clearly said "GPS + cellular" on Walmarts website, so I bought two for my two kids. Went to activate them and no luck- no cellular radio. Walmart's website is just garbage.

So I don't know if this Nike version will have the same issue. Thank goodness for easy returns.

This is a bit off topic but do any insiders know when the Apple Watch 9 is being released? I have my eye on the 7 or 8 refurb from apple but wondering when prices will drop further. It would be my first smart watch so this 1st gen SE is also tempting if i would have to wait a while for a price drop

Not entirely correct. I have a family member who has an Apple Watch with service, without an iPhone. This was for a child.

I bought this for my kid. It has cellular so can setup independently from an iPhone. If I add my ATT plan, it's $10 + tx, etc. Solid buy

The band itself costs $49 and another $30 for the charging puck.

So, $70 more for the watch.
Not a bad deal, If you are gifting it to a kid or if you're gonna use it for fall detection of old people.
