I bought and returned this. If you're going with one of the larger carriers you're still stuck with that bogus $35 activation fee regardless. Almost all carriers have the same monthly cost.

I needed one soon so I bought the Apple Watch SE 2 from Verizon for $299 - $150 in bill credits over 36 months. Crappy deal but if you can wait it out they seem to give you almost all of the watch cost back in bill credits every now and then.

Do I HAVE to add a plan to the watch or can I just pair it with my iPhone? Currently have a fitness watch (Amazfit) that pairs with my iPhone without a plan, but it doesn't have the functionality of the Apple Watch.

Bought this last month for my daughter who is not old enough for a phone but we needed a way to keep track of her in the neighborhood and be able to call her. We are an Apple household, so I set it up on my phone but for a child, which allows me to set parental restrictions on who she can call/text and when it goes into school time mode (which can be required by teachers when they're at school). Basically makes it into a watch.

I'm with T-Mobile and they have a $10 basic plan for watches and with an auto pay discount it knocks it down to $5 a month.

When I was researching other "kids" watches with calling ability, there were some that were a little cheaper (Gab, etc) but the savings on the watch would have been offset by the plans ($15/mo).

As some have mentioned, this is basically a series 4 watch, so it should be fine with regards to updates for the OS for a while.

You don't have to use the cellular part, just don't add it to a plan.

This right here.

We're doing this with my 13yo son. Works great for this use case, and you can keep your kid off the toxic socials and control who they can txt/iMessage too.
It will be a lesson in responsibility as it needs charging nightly.

We have it on our ATT family plan and it's $25 activation, $5/mo

I'm curious about if waiting now for Prime Day deals (+competition too) is a better idea?

also don't forget Allstate warranty is only $20 for 3y and $12 for 2y and covers more than apple care.

no brainer if you're getting it for a kiddo or senior.

I believe It is for shallow swimming and is waterproof so you can shower with it. I wouldn't go scuba diving in it

YMMV but I chatted with Verizon last Saturday and they sold me a gen 2 40mm for 299 -150

Their accompanying plan is $10 + $5 fee/taxes so that's not slick, but I was wanting one so took the plunge

It's a SE(lower tier) model that first introduced in 2020, not the first gen Apple Watch. I won't buy one though without all the health functions which are the only reasons I'm wearing it
Does the SE not come with all the health functions?

On mobile so hard to link to it but use the search. There is already a thread going on for a month about this. Your answers will probably be in there.

Like T-Mobile plans. There is a $5 and $10 plan and which is right for you.

Answering all of the angry comments of "THIS IS A STUPID PRICE FOR A 1st GEN!?!!" When this is. SE 1st gen. It is not that old. I have mine on my wrist right now. Works great.

Bought this nike cellular edition for a child going into middle school. So he has a way to contact me, on scout events, at baseball practice, etc since they are not getting a phone yet.

Not entirely correct. I have a family member who has an Apple Watch with service, without an iPhone. This was for a child.
I bought this watch about a month ago for my child without an iphone. It was setup using my wife's iPhone and I can't figure out how to download apps into the watch.
I created an icloud account for the watch.
Setup the watch for a family member via wife's iPhone.
I googled and reached out to apple but no answer so far. Can you help?
