I don't use these but my brother does. He's been using a reusable steel one that he purchased from Alibaba for years now. It's not as convenient as these Nespresso's but the price they charge for each capsule is insane.
I personally just french press my coffee.
You're referencing the original pods I assume, these new ones are much harder to get a consistent drink. You need to re-use old pods, get a good grinder, pack it in, and cover with a foil seal without covering the codes on the pod that the machine reads.
I bought one and grind down to what I make in my manual espresso machine. Haven't ever gotten it to work out like the nespresso pods, not even close (in taste, strength, or color). Do you know where I can find a guide on best practice for the reusable ones?
I spent a good deal of time trying to find one that works. I worked with a mfg on Alibaba and they cannot get the metal thin enough on the reusable capsules. This leads to overall weaker espresso. When you're dealing with such a small amount of ground to start with, ever small decrease in grinds matters.
If you're ok settling for less impressive espresso it could be ok. For myself, I just bought a Breville espresso maker and use that instead. It's way easier than messing with the regular Nespresso pods. My wife still uses and loves her Nespresso though.
So the choice comes down to lower price and a little extra work (Breville or similar) or 2x the cost (minimum) and pretty much zero work. Both ways can make good espresso IMO.
