Most people buying department store brand bikes aren't very interested in dropping hundreds of dollars into upgrades. Even Seth from Berm Peak, in his Kent Trouvaille series, admitted that for what he ended up paying for the bike and upgrades, he could've just paid retail for a bike shop brand bike. And he's an expert, with all the tools, knowledge, spare parts bins, and time to do all that work.

But if buying an expensive fork with a tapered steer tube is your jam, then don't buy a bike without a tapered head tube.

Most people looking at a bike like this would never know whether the head tube is tapered or not, nor should they care.

It only matters if you want to upgrade fork with air fork with 120+mm of travel. If you are not going to do jumps (90%+ of MTB riders do not) a typical straight steer air fork like $160+ Rockshox Judy Air or Recon with 100mm of travel is more than enough. With that Kent Trouvaille for $50 more will give you a tapered tube (still comes with straight one like it matters) and 9 speed vs 8. It still uses cheap bearings though so gonna need a new headset regardless.

Besides tire size, there is one main things that separate an okay bike from the better bikes, and can't be changed: a tapered head tube. This doesn't have it.

Just watched this video from Berm Peak, so here's another option to throw into the hat:

Maybe that's true for some people, who ride by themselves in city parks or dirt roads, but I wish I had known that before getting into mountain biking a few years back. The options for the fork are limited with a straight tube. Plus, I don't like the idea of having to ditch the bike and spend twice the price for what some would call a 'real' mountain bike. The Ozark Trail, for $400, with the ability to swap components out and even add a dropper post would allow a person to start low, and then replace components as they have the money and desire to do so. That, in my opinion, is better than spending $50 less on a bike that a person would have to get rid of once they start riding with other more experienced riders.

But we're slickdealers - we like a good deal, and we don't mind putting in the extra work to get it. I paid far less for upgrading what I have right now than buying it outright. But, comparing one department store MTB, the Kent, to the Ozark Trail Ridge, you get more capable bike in the Ridge, for just $50 more. If someone doesn't care about that, there are even less expensive options.

I think this is good advice to those considering mountain biking. People who get into it and are thrifty are likely to work on their own bike and add in little things like this. Spend $400 and see if it's your thing, then spend $100 here and $100 there to improve your ride, rather than trying to resell that $400 bike to buy a $1500 bike.

Geometry says you will die. Everyone rode a mountain bike in the 1980s and 90s has a bad back not because they are 50 years old. It's because they rode a bike that wasn't fitted.
I have news for you. They were fitting bikes back then too. Bike geometry and fitment recommendations are always evolving.

For $350, any bike with a front fork is worth it if it's somewhat durable. If you're looking to get into riding I'd give this a shot. I would if I didn't have an old front suspension bike from Dicks in the basement!

I bit on this one. My son is getting into mountain biking and his old, free bikes keep breaking on the smallest of jumps and trails.

Are these components any good? No hydraulic brakes?

Why do we need to keep classifying mens and women's bikes? There isn't a difference in the bike. The slanted bar is from war times when women wore dresses and rode a bike.
