I'll bite at $100 for the 2 TB 980 Pro.
If you have the $15 off AMEX points Amazon deal that brings it right around $100. I just did that today.

Can someone explain the difference between this with a heatsink and WITHOUT a heatsink?

w/ a heatsink means the drive includes a heatsink built into the drive's plastic housing. The heatsink dissipates the high temps generated by the write/read activities on the SSD. This matters because high temps decrease the lifespan of the drive, and probably also cause other non-failure effects I'm not aware of. Lower temps increase the lifespan of the drive. Inclusion of a heatsink would matter less if you are not frequently writing to the drive (ie using it for occasional and infrequent backups).

Are you putting this drive into a large open PC case. or a space-confined laptop? This would be an important consideration. The free space around the drive will impact the natural heat dissipation that would occur in normal operation

As far as materials go, heatsinks are usually made of aluminum or copper, which distribute the heat generated by the SSD's activity and help the actual flash memory module maintain better (lower) operating temperatures

That's the crux of it. I'd be interested to see a performance and temperature comparison of the heatsink vs non-heatsink versions under identical conditions. Couldn't find one based on a quick Google search, but I'd guess that someone has already done one, placed the review on Youtube, and asked in the video that you "smash the like or subscribe button"

I have a hyte y40 case so it's pretty open, but I might just still get the heatsink one cuz I plan to use this for a long time.

Most PC case owners say an SSD-specific heatsink isn't necessary, but I don't think it could hurt. There are threads reviewing this.. give your exact question a google search and you should find them.

Edit: relevant comment from https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc...heat_sink/

"Typically for PCI-e Gen 3 NVMes, they won't get hot enough to be problematic - the part that generates the most heat and is the most sensitive to heat is the controller, on the frontside of the NVMe's PCB. Most NVMe drives have a sticker on it that will say "do not remove", and that is because the sticker isn't paper, but copper, and it is meant to be a heatspreader. Most good motherboards will come with a heatsink for the NVMe nowadays, but if your drive lacks one, as long as you're not stressing the drive by doing a ton of reads and writes, you ought to be fine.

Now, if you have a Gen 4 drive, those get super hot, and you should at least make sure it has some form of heatsink, either from the motherboard, or aftermarket. Some drives are sold with a heatsink together, and those are very nice for keeping them cool.

You will be able to ensure proper operations of the drive with a heatsink/heatspreader, but it isn't usually strictly necessary. If you want one, get one, they do look nice, but whether or not you need one will depend on what kind of temps your drive gets to. If it hits like 80-90C, I'd get a heatsink."

Hmm I bought this without heatsink off Amazon the other day and it's on sale there (without heatsink) for 59.99
Hopefully it doesn't get too hot without it....
From what I've read, the need for heatsink is almost nonexistent in most cases. Just have decent airflow through the pc case of course
