These are solid Paulownia wood, which is basically Balsa.
Nothing to brag about, but still better than the cardboard/particle board crap from IKEA and the metal brackets alone are worth at least this much. The images are showing other sizes, but I'd advise against anything other than the 16" unless you plan on supporting them with just the drywall. It's definitely doable for very light loads, but personally I avoid anything that doesn't go into studs.
