If you want minimal cost to keep a regular number alive on a phone, look at Tello. $6 for 500MB and 100 voice minutes and unlimited text. If you set a reminder to renew a day before the auto renew, it is rollover data. There are referral promos that can get you some credit to buy a better plan and then you can rollover that data to a cheaper plan a day before the auto renew. It is on the T-Mobile network. I looked all over and that was the cheapest I could find.
Hello mobile is actually cheaper/more generous with their $5/month (tax included) 500MB and unlimited calls/texts plan, on T-Mobile as well. Can't really comment on their customer service or data speed though.

I was able to use the SIM on a locked ATT phone, locked Verizon and locked T-Mobile phone. It worked on all three Android phones even though the website says you need an unlocked phone. Currently using on a locked T-Mobile. If you want to use TextNow on separate phones you have to set up new accounts tied to different emails. You can't just order new SIM cards under the same account and plug them into new phones - it won't work. WiFi calling does not require a SIM though. Unfortunately, I couldn't use my Google Voice phone number with the "free" SIM since "2G like" data speeds were too slow (see below). You'd have to get a plan to make that work.
i have a locked MetroPCS phone and I'd love to be able to use this plan on that phone. Any thoughts on whether or not a locked MetroPCS phone would work?

metro Phones are locked ONLY to Metro for first 180 days.
Chances are slim to none that you can get them unlocked before 180 days to use on ANY other carriers.
Rare exceptions: A few phones will work on TM from Day 1

Looking to use this with a seldom used Canada number.

It presented me with Canada phone numbers for text option....

Interested to see if anyone has ported in an Ontario number....

So can I use these numbers for online account verification or will it be flagged as VOIP numbers?

I'm interested in knowing what this service is too.

Why would you mention something if you're not willing to at least point fellow SDers in the right direction?
Search google for "phone service for $10 a month"

several will come up. A good amount of them aren't capped on data, they just slow down to 2g speeds

That's really good if you don't need the rollover Tello offers.

I actually do know of another soft-capped plan with 2GBs of high speed data, at the same cost, but it has to be paid on a yearly, rather than monthly basis, and doesn't include N. America roaming.

It does however include free international calling, and it's a bonafide mobile line so it works with all 2FA/OTP services: https://slickdeals.net/share/android_app/fp/610145
How about h2o annual plan?

3GBs/mo at a $12.50/mo rate if paid annually. I wonder what taxes are like...

None of the VOIP solutions works if you want receive phone calls from their apps. It just drains your battery if they stay awake in the background. I would prefer they offer a data only sim with cheaper price, then I will consider.

Check out MobileX (Verizon MVNO).

2GBs data-only is about $8 w/taxes.

Right now I am using

1. Redpocket/Verizon for $15 for 5G. (Redpocket/T-mobile network has bad coverage in my area. Have the real phone# just in case some SMS verification issue. And I can ditch this # when good deal shows up).
2. Google voice#: Paid once a $20 porting fee. The old # that friends/familes use which never changes.
3. TextNow#: Free. For business contacts which rarely rings.

#2 and #3's SMS verification sometimes would not work. Then I'll have to use #1 to verify.

Let me know if there is any better deal out there.

Personally being able to select network in Redpocket is a big plus for me.
