That's been a pretty common thing over the past few years. Excess phosphorus runoff gets into rivers, streams, and bodies of water and causes plants and algae to grow and cause problems.

Around here you can only use Phosphorus on your lawn if you're establishing new grass or have a soil test indicating that you need to add some.
...you want overpriced? Look up scotts.. they want $65-80 for their ~35 pound bags (depending on the product).
Im with you. I don't like weed n feeds.

I apply preemergent (lesco stone wall) in the spring. I monitor https://gddtracker.msu.edu/?model...&zip=46360 and my local forecast for when to apply it. Usually end up in late april early may.

I also then fertlize using like the lesco 30-0-10 in mid/late may. Some may say to fertlize earlier but i base this on purdue turf grass schedule https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&s...f99btHeukt
Plus my own research that grass root development in spring is better than forcing top growth with fertlizer.

I apply liquid weed killer with my tow behind sprayer in may-ish. Then spot treat as needed.

I then just water in june and july.
In mid/late august depending on temps give a 30-0-10 app of fert along with core arreating.

Final app is around mid november, depending on forecast with a winterizer type fert.

you could do a spring fert to apply a 30-0-10 in early may then again in mid/late June as long as temps agree with you.

Seems kinda hit or miss for some reason, just one store near me had the 40% off deal. The general purpose 30-0-10 fertilizer [lowes.com] is on sale for $43.49 (from $72.48) and you can get that down to $34.80 if you buy 5+ bags, which is a pretty good deal in this environment. This would have cost less than $20 per bag when this deal popped up last year (I think Lesco was 60% off):

Yep, I stock up when there's a deal and use it over the next few seasons. I bought the Lesco pre-emergent stuff during this sale last year and used it on my lawn this spring.

Is it kind of odd to see the phosphorus amount 0 in the N-P-K values of Lescos normal fertilizer? I thought the other fertz I usually buy has some of the P? Looks like Lesco only puts it in their starter fertilizer...

Shoot.... I'm not sure what stuff I should get. I typically don't like weed and feed.

What do you guys do for your routine?

Buy the straight dimension for grab grass and 30-0-10 fert and you can spot treat other weeds.
