I think most of the sign in portals changed winter of 2022. Which killed off the remainder of sites for desktop usage. Glad you can still use it some how.

This records on demand streaming shows to your HDD so you can watch later or watch multiple times without eating into data caps if you have them. Or if you have a crappy ISP that bogs down during Primetime, you can set the show to record in the middle of the night when traffic is least congested.

If you record something from a service like HBO Max then later cancel your subscription, can you still watch the show you downloaded?

You can still watch the recording. This doesn't download the shows it records them think of it like a fancy screen recorder. It does one-to-one recording time. 43 minute show 43 minutes to record.

If you use Plex it's a way to add content. There are ways to even strip out the commercials if the streaming service puts them in. And then let Plex re scrape the metadata.

Sounds like it's strictly for recording online services... For the services you already pay for.. and most likely already have a download for offline use option.. I don't get the point except for maybe the AdSkip feature if you have Hulu with ads and other streaming services that contain ads.

Too bad it is only available for Windows. My main home server is Linux and my secondary one is a Mac primarily to run AirMessage. Otherwise, this would be a decent addition to my main server. I use Channels DVR on my Linux server, but it can only record linear streaming services. I highly doubt Channels DVR or Plex would ever dare to add features like PlayOn's. It is so unique, it almost worth considering going back to Windows for my media server.

only if you didn't upgrade your windows...they screwed those of us over that didn't want to be in the dark ages w/ respect to windows and security flaws....

it's more like the abandoned it since you can no longer log into most of the sites due to changes in how the logins work and the company's lack of interest in fixing the desktop version so they can focus on the more profitable playon cloud.... lifetime my ass....

Some uses are mentioned. If you don't get it, sounds like you don't need it.

Some programs come and go from services. Or, some people only subscribe to a service for a short time. This creates mp4 files that can be saved for later, no restrictions, no syncing back with the service. And yes, ads, works with the free services too.

And some of us have slow internet. I have only cell options, or satellite. Currently waiting on upgraded equipment for a new cell option, but at twelve miles to the tower, it's still not going to be great. Although what I have streams with no issue, skipping forward or back often results in a pause of a few seconds. Much nicer with instant seeking off a drive.
