Had a sudden early 1980s floppy flashback when I read that question. Made me think of that thing that would cut a notch into the side of a 5.25" floppy so you could use both sides of a disk on a single-sided floppy drive.

Man, those were the days...

This is faster at sequential but slower at random reads. Longer durability I think.

Are you supposed to rip off the heat spreader to put on a real cooler?

Wasn't the notch made on the 3.5" hard floppy case to make it double sided?

No. 3.5" disks couldn't be flipped over to use the other side both because the metal center prevented it, and the door couldn't slide that way (although I suppose it could have been removed).

5.25" disks had a roughly quarter-inch cutout a little over an inch down the right side to allow writes to the disk. You'd cover it with black tape to prevent writing. Basically, a light was shined through that spot, and if the photoreceptor didn't see the light then writes to the disk were prevented.

All one had to do was flip the disk over & make another notch on the other side to allow the back of the disk to be used on a single-sided floppy drive. They got wise to this and prevented that from working with the design of the 3.5" disks.

So they could've made it hold twice the capacity, but went lengths to make sure it's not easy, just to sell more disks? TIL. Thanks for sharing.
