I'm using the i5-6600T from a previous deal. I've had a good experience with it. The iGPU can even play some older and less demanding games, think Skyrim at 720p.

So little CPU innovation happened during this period at Intel, that a 4c/8t i3-10105T [cpubenchmark.net] Comet Lake Refresh CPU from 2021 is only about 10-13% faster than an i7-6700T [cpubenchmark.net] according to PassMark. The 6600T falls behind a little in multi-threading because it doesn't have hyperthreading, but it feels snappy to me. I don't think the age of these CPUs matters much, they might be capable of lasting decades.

I notice there is 1 Kaby Lake chip in there (i7-7700). Intel HD Graphics 630 might result in a better video experience, you can be the judge:

I find the size of the MFF models to be pretty much perfect for a mini PC. Others will want the larger ones so they can insert a video card.

There are workarounds to install windows 11 on them, but that means that Windows Update does not have to provide security patches. Do some research about that and ask yourself what you really need from Windows 11. You could also install a Linux-based OS if you are adventurous or curious about those. There are quite a few distros that will give you a very Windows-like experience and run very well. Chances are you will not use the system for modern games and Linux works very well for web surfing and streaming.

I have 4 of these I use for Proxmox. They're good for basic services. I host Home Assistant, PiHole, TrueNas, Unifi, and a bunch of other basic services. Nothing really heavy and i expect it will work fine for that for another 5+ years. I wouldn't use these for desktop computing since they can't get windows 11 without trickery.

Should still work fine for lightweight stuff like web surfing, videos, and office work. Just make sure you get exactly what you want in the specs, unless you're wanting to crack it open yourself and do your own upgrades once you get it. Heck, I still have an old i3-4170 system in the den that I use for video streaming to a 65 inch tv and it works perfectly fine, so these should handle such tasks easily.

whenever i see these, ppl always say they're really good for things like opnsense? pfsense? bc of the low power draw?
i use one as a dedicated streaming pc(video streams) with a vpn and it works fine for that. don't really think i'd use it for much more than that.

The MFF doesn't have any expansion slots. I was thinking about the SFF for opnsense but they don't really use low power processors.

for 40 (20 bucks) more it seems like a no brainer to go for the one equipped with a 6700T for hyperthreading.

I paid slightly more a few weeks ago, with the same intent.

As far as I know, this desktop is limited to 4k @ 30Hz. (At least that's how it displays on my Sammy 65KS9000... If anyone knows how to bump up to 4k @ 60Hz PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know!!!!).

The 30Hz although extremely low, is doable, and worth it to skip HULU ads and YT ads when I'm watching IMO....

It's extremely zippy, and i upgraded RAM to 32GB (I had 2 spare SODIMM 16GB sticks in my stash).

There is one minor issue, which I think is software related to the desktop... Is when i change shows or platforms from streaming on browser, my display goes blank then has a static screen. Changing between sources and back will always resolve this. YMMV on this though, and if SOMEONE's got a fix for this plz let me know!! Smilie (I've already updated to latest intel drivers for this desktop).

Yeah, these are nice machines for running "homelab" type things on proxmox. Might have to throw some extra memory or storage in, but for the space that it takes up (the micros), and the absolute dead quiet these things are, they definitely have their use for this type of scenario. I moved home assistant from a pi 4 to a vm on proxmox on a 9020, and the performance difference was incredible. My main other task is a plex server (I don't worry about transcoding things), plus a couple of other minor things. I've got room to run more stuff on the 9020 when I get around to it, but might have to pick up one of these as a newer model.

true...i am typing on a 12 year old desktop: works fine. basically you need to up the ram to 16 giggs and install a SATA ssd for good service. it surfs the net, watches video and even does photo shop elements; of course a new one would be faster. these i5-6500 chips would be much faster than my 12 year old desk top.

if you want windows 11 you would be better off with an i5 and 8th generation chip for hassle free upgrades.

The cool kids get a m.2 to gigabit adapter and dremel it into the case so they can get street cred for using the MFF case. Still not fanless since the cpu has on, but now the power supply is a brick.

The MFF unit already has Gigabit ethernet. No "street cred" from me for a useless mod. laugh out loud

EDIT: thinking twice, you probably need two ethernet ports for opnsense?

Any thoughts on this vs the Ryzen 5 2400GE HP Elitedesks or Lenovo M715q that are on eBay from other off lease sellers for a bit more than $100? Seems like a no brainer to get the Ryzen imo, but maybe I'm missing something.
