I didn't know Walmart sold $400 bikes. Would these be comparable to entry level bike store quality?

A few features are comparable, but they still have lots of other crappy parts and the build quality is quite lacking.

The general consensus on the Axum DP is that it's an excellent entry-level mountain bike. It doesn't have top of the line components, but it comes with what you need to get started and you will understand what to upgrade later.

The 19" frame is also on sale

Edit: at this price point and even $100-200 higher, you are going to see Shimano Tourney RD's on just about every "entry level" MTB bike in a bike store...and honestly, upgrading a rear derailleur is not that expensive. I don't know what the Axum comes with, looks like an off-brand but I'm not an expert.

It comes with a generic group set by AXE. Its a decent bike, but this isn't a great deal as it was as low as $228 a few months ago.

The Kent Trouvaille is generally better entry level Walmart bike as it comes with an Advent 9 groupset and an SR Suntour fork

Decent frame. The cable guides need to be drilled out to use an actual solid cable, but it has a tapered head tube.

I have an modified Axum. Stock for stock I would be hard pressed to pick this over the recent Canyon deal. I really like having the dropper and the Axum ultimately has more upgrade paths but out of the box I really disliked the seat and brakes. The fork was also a disappointment compared to something like the Suntour XCM. Now that I've replaced all of those things and added the dropper I have a bike I'm really enjoying for around $450.

The Canyon is $500 more and some of the Shimano parts ended up being replaced with lesser parts. However, if you buy it expecting the downgraded parts I think you get a bike that is generally better out of the box. No dropper but it does have hydraulic brakes out of the box. It also has a mostly Shimano 12 speed drive train with a much wider total ratio range out of the box. The Axum's lowest gear isn't as low as I would want.

Anyway, I think the Axum is good but after being spoiled by a $228 price (w/o dropper) I'm less excited by the $400 dropper model. I guess a nice thing about it, unlike the Canyon, you can buy it and return it if the thing really isn't a good deal for you.

3 things this has that most bike store entry-level bikes don't have at this price range which may or may not be valuable to you.

1. Has a tapered head tube which makes it future-proof for upgrading to the latest front suspension.
2. Dropper post. This is an underrated game-changer for riding trails and is only found on higher-end bike builds.
3. 1x crank set up. There are more expensive, well know, brands that don't have this setup at even higher than this price tag.

Depending on what you're looking for this bike may have features you may never use but compared to many bike store entry-level bikes it is more than comparable.

If you're going to do anything past riding dirt trails I'd at least look into hydraulic brakes after that the major upgrades would get you to the next price bracket of "premium" bikes.
