Have had one of these for a year now and it's simply amazing for the price.

Clear text, great colors, HDR is really great, good blacks, good refresh rate and no ghosting. Outside of wanting oled, couldn't ask for better performance

No, it is just the panel type. Each panel type has different strengths and weaknesses. I prefer VA over IPS.

I have a 32" 1440p LG IPS 165hz, 34 inch VA 1440p 144hz from Gigabyte and 43" 4K VA 144 hz from Samsung. Of the three the 34" is the one I least like. When playing games on 34" monitor the intro scenes play at 4:3 aspect ratio, the icons on windows look a bit messy, and overall just not a monitor I like. Samsung is drool worthy, more so as from a scaling standing 16:9 aspect ratio monitors scale well with games, YouTube etc.
yah, after reading Valorant, etc. doesn't handle UW, I opted for the Acer IPS 32 for $210. I think 1 single UW 34" would be amazing for the extra real estate, for productivity, but for gaming, actually not so much.

Bought one on these on amex business platinum late last year with the $200 off statement credit. Great monitor, for VA it displays text perfectly.

My experience with VA panels:

Deeper blacks.
Terrible smearing.
Screen flicker when using adaptive sync (goes away when you turn off gsync/freesync).
Still get light bleed.

Apart from the deeper blacks, there's literally nothing advantageous for gamers on VA panels. I've heard the Samsung VAs do a better job with the smearing but I haven't tried one of those.

For my money, never again. I'd rather have a really good IPS than anything else, even OLED (until they really handle burn-in issues). VA is for folks who want a big screen display but don't want to spend much for it.
Can you tell us how many VA panels priced at over 250 you've tried? A panel type alone doesn't tell the full story. My brother has an Asus IPS that is disgusting for example.

I have an OLED Alienware and was looking to get this one for my brother. All reviews I've seen including rtings say this one on the super fast preset makes ghosting unnoticeable.

I am looking for this for trading. Fast response charting and small text is all I need. Sounds from what you describe like this will do well.

Its a ok/good monitor. HDR 400 is pretty bad compared say HDR on a smartTV and don't expect image quality to comparable to for example high end smartphone screen. However, love the ultrawide screen for everything though. You can split two browser windows and everything is perfectly readable and ulrawide gaming is great, I only wish more games support it.

Agreed.
I tried this for productivity - the text display is terrible compare to my other 27" IPS monitors.

Well, yea, thats how resolution works bud. 1440p on 34 inches isnt gonna look as clear as 1440p on 27 inches.

When Diablo 4 was released a few weeks ago, I changed the monitor on my desk from my normal display (27" 170hz IPS 16:9) to one of the spares we have for guest rigs (35" Acer 200hz 21:9 VA) because I wanted a larger screen and the ultrawide implementation is particularly good in D4.

That monitor is several years old now, but it was very high end when I bought it. If memory serves it was around $900. I've also seen several other varieties of VA panels in action, but this is the only one I have extensive experience with. But everything I have seen mentioned in literally every review lines up with what I've seen personally. It's the nature of VA panels.

I think perhaps you are misunderstanding me when I say "smearing" and you say "ghosting". I'm not talking about a blur, per se. I am talking about something bright against a dark background smearing like you are wiping gel off your screen.

For example, in D4, there's often a bright yellow quest marker above an NPC's head, and since so much of D4's ambience is "dark", if that NPC (with the marker) walks through a dark corridor, the yellow marker will appear to smear and have this red sort of "smear halo" effect. This has happened on every VA panel I have ever seen, including mine, and every one I have seen reviewed. It's easy to test; go to a store, find a demo, set the background (if it lets you) to something dark and then drag a small window across the screen while watching the title bar.

Again, I think the only ones to have MOSTLY sorted this are Samsung with their QLED VA stuff (or whatever they call it), but the issue still persists in some form.

The smearing is one thing, but the other problem that is a deal killer is that adaptive sync does not work correctly on the vast majority of VA panels. I almost—ALMOST—pulled the trigger on a Samsung VA the other day, but reviews said the only way to cure the adaptive sync flicker issue (which is the exact same thing I have on mine and have heard of/seen with countless other makes and models) is to create a custom display profile, dropping the refresh rate down about 16-20% from the maximum.

(That was on the particular Samsung model; on my Acer, I have tried it at 120, 144, 160 (OD), 180 (OD) and 200 (OD), and the flicker *does not go away* until you turn adaptive sync off. What's more, mine has the Gsync Ultimate chip/module in it. It's not just a "compatible" one, it's the whole enchilada.

The use case for VA is honestly low cost FPS gaming where you can run high overdrive and not notice the smear as much, OR for people who watch movies but can't afford an OLED. But for anything that requires close scrutiny and the screen moving a lot—Diablo, MOBAs, City building games like Anno or Skylines, whatever—they just don't work well.

The smearing and the flicker issues are just too severe in my opinion. There's a reason VAs are near universally cheaper than IPS screens with roughly the same size and feature set. They are better than TN panels, mostly, but inferior to IPS except for that narrow scope of usage I explained earlier.

Does that make it pretty bad?

Generally.... VA will have better black levels while IPS will have better color accuracy and viewing angles

That's generally though... there are good IPS monitors that have better black levels than bad VA monitors and there are good VA monitors that have better color accuracy than bad IPS monitors. You really have to check the individual reviews of each model and you usually get what you pay for.

That has almost nothing to do with VA vs IPS. You are comparing a lower pixel density. There are OLEDs that look worse than $100 TN monitors for text depending on sub pixel arrangement for example. It really depends on each model and you can't generalize like that.

Like the guy above said, you usually get what you pay for: so generally a cheap VA monitor will look worse than a more expensive IPS monitor and vice versa.

The black smearing on this one was too much for me to deal with. I have a 4070 ti and was looking for a monitor to play Diablo 4 on. Ended up returning it, pretty big disappointment after the decent RTings review on this one.
Bro I play Diablo on this on my ps5 and it works great

If you're playing it on the PS5 that almost certainly means you are further away from it (with a controller) than a mouse and keyboard gamer would be, so that may be why you don't notice it as much.

And further, the PS5 doesn't need any higher refresh/frame rate than 120 I believe, and that will affect it as well. It also won't trigger the same adaptive sync flicker issue that plagues basically all VA panels when using gsync and freesync, because VRR on a PS5 operates at much lower framerate ranges (40 to 120).

Ultimately it comes down to personal preference, but there are IPS options that are pretty close right now with good sale prices for a PC gamer.

Wholeheartedly recommend if you taper expectations. Definitely worth 350.

The backlight/poor greys stand out in the HDR mode a bit, and the colors get a bit like "vivid mode" on a TV. But thats the only flaw, and really only if youre watching movies in HDR on it, HDR games are better.
