What's even worse is that many cell phone companies only stock the lower end version. They remove the MicroSD slot and offer a 128 or 256gb version of the phone but T-Mobile, for example, will only sell the 128gb version.

May want to consider sony experia flagship WITH SSD vs samsung and the rest who have neglected to innovate and put what customers want as a feature. While the costs of all sd ssd come down, flagship phones have NOT

Water resistance? Maybe they are more prone to get water damage with SD slot? Just wondering if that could be related. Otherwise, yup. Wish they didn't eliminate SD.

I don't think that makes sense, if the phone has a SIM card slot. Since most SD cards use the same tray as the SIM slot. And I think a lot of water resistant phones still have a SIM card slot.
