I have both the Lsx ii and the LS 50 metas. I had the ls 50 metas hooked up first with a subwoofer which sounded great no complaints. Amp does matter so that affects the budget. For a desk set up it was they were a little too big including needed to have an amp. The lsx II's sound great for such a small speaker. Definitely not as good as the ls 50's but still good. If i didn't have the bigger speakers set up first i probably wouldn't have noticed as much. I would recommend a subwoofer. For reference I only use them for pc gaming.
