My wife is a hardware engineer in the SSD industry. She estimates prices down another 15-30% within 3-4 months based on current projections.

Edit: she got mad at me when I told her I posted this. The things do for my beloved SD <3

Samsung runs hot. Hynix runs cool.

P31 is probably the most efficient SSD on the market. It can make your laptop last longer in battery mode when compare to other SSD especially PICe Gen 4 ones. On top of that, it also has top performance in terms of PCIe 3 spec.

People who knock on this drive are clueless trolls. This about the best M.2 NvME if you're not using it for PS5 storage expansion.

Even if you are maxed out at Gen 3 on your motherboard, seems more prudent to get the Gen 4 Samsung 980 Pro for $6 more.
It was $90 in Samsung.com early today. Picked it up in Best Buy 1hr after checkout.

Folks, the NAND makers (SK Hynix, Samsung, and Micron) have cut back their supply by 20% over the last few months. Why make more when you are losing money on each one? We will see prices bottom out this quarter, and I am pretty sure the top industry consultants that present to us are seeing maybe 5-10% price drops - certainly not 30%

I've only been following memory and HDD costs for 25 years at one of the largest OEMs in the world - and I've seen many reports saying that the memory pricing will bottom out in November, and SSD's in December. Definitely don't expect a 30% drop! I just don't want people to be disappointed when the prices flatten out.

To this drive, I have installed one in my laptop - and it is awesome! I have P41 in my desktop too. One thing to warn you about - the new Dell XPS13 has the HDD soldered down, and Macbooks have DRM locked their drives so you can't add in or swap drives.

One other thing they don't tell you.

The SK Hynix P41 or P31s do NOT have Bitlocker hardware encryption. This is both a bad and good thing.

bad = slower the encrypt, slight performance loss for bitlockered drive
good = more secure. doesn't rely on manufacturer potential faulty firmwares. Software encryption is legit.

Well no that's only bad. Even with hardware encryption you're still free to use software encryption, but you're presenting the lack of an option as a positive? Confused

Meh price? Last best deal on this SSD was $108 so you're saving $14. This is a no brainer for laptop users.

If you have a desktop (and you need the speed) or a PS4, of course you're not going to be looking for a Gen 3. A downside to Gen 4 is that it runs extremely hot and you're going to need good airflow and a good heatsink to keep temperatures down. Laptops have restricted airflow and are going to overheat with a Gen 4, which is why the P31 is more than ideal.

Unless you think prices on this will become even cheaper, which is unlikely.

SSD prices are predicted to go back up by fall as SSD manufacturers get rid of their overstock.
Relax mate I just gave my personal opinion, I'll pass on this because gen3 and the speed that's it, I also disagree about the predictions of price increase on the contrary this will keep dropping of course unless another pandemic (fingers crossed we don't), but again is just my opinion.

I'm not presenting anything in any way. I was pissed when I found out my P41 platinum doesn't support hardware but then I read about the nightmare that are firmwares for HDs not actually securely encrypting the drives. Had I known this info before, I would've chose software encryption anyways.

I think that's somewhat proprietary information based on internal stats. Hopefully she's not on SD to read this part too LOL!

Anyways, I don't think it's a big deal. It doesn't require tons of research to see prices are cratering.

Its a solid deal. I would still lean towards the 2T Samsung 980 pro gen4 for $99. Or the 2TB Teamgroup T-Force CARDEA Zero Z440 Gen 4 $89

You need a PCIe 4.0 drive. There are many about this price range including the Samsung 980 Pro:

This drive is still the most power efficient drive and best for mobile devices.

So tempted. I have the 1TB and it's a great drive.

Don't need 2TB

Depending on what you're doing, you won't see any difference in gen 3 vs gen 4.

SSD speeds are weird. I have one of the most powerful gen 4 laptops around (Legion Pro 7, 13900HX, 32gb 5600 ram, P41 2tb), with top tier gen 4 SSDs and don't notice any difference on day to day or gaming, when comparing to my old 5800h, 32gb 3200 ram, P31 2tb…

It's like Windows can only move so fast. 🤷 ♂️
Multitasking on a laptop is inherently crippled so yea the preformance will be hidden.
