Edit: searched around XDA a bit. No magisk. No root. Not much interest from XDA community.

1- you get the credit and 20% instantly. Most often when you select accept price given and the item is registered to your account.
2- you do not get the credit or 20% until the item is received, often when you select return item and/or it is not a product registered to your account.
As Tumbleweed and Wavy-Nife noted, during the trade in process it will state if it is "instant" or "once received".
Only this time instant does not seem to be working for many people, including me.
I did a trade 2 times, one for a Fire tablet couple days ago, one for this stick. Both times, for both trades, it stated the credit and 20% would be applied instantly and automatically- yet while the credit does appear, neither showed 20% in checkout.
Like I've said I have done several trades over the years, and I have only had this happen once before where it has said instantly but it did not shown up instantly.
It's a hassle contacting Customer Service because sometimes they say the 20% does not apply because the item is already on special sale, sometimes they want to take the 20% off the sale price- not full price as the coupon does. Can be a pain in the butt for $11.
My trade was selected from my registered items (I tried two different registered items), and accepted the price offered. At the next step (both times) I knew it would not instantly discount the 20% or the offered trade-in amount in advance (like you said and knew just didn't bring it up earlier) So, I knew I needed to stop. Then I removed that trade-in or it would have stayed in the "My trades" section.
For that case the next trade-in you start, whenever you do, it asks you to "add more trades". At that point, you could remove the extra trade, but I like to do it while I am thinking about it to keep things simple later. It may be weeks or months until I try again.
For me, it still worked out alright because I had one of the Amex promos (use 714 points which deducts $5 from the price as a partial payment).
I got 15% off of the original price. So I spent $12ish plus the $5 worth of points I spent. Happy camper [saying around $17. Could have been considerably better, but maybe next time. I have had it go the other way most of the time getting my value and discount up front. Even when not selecting a registered device to trade.
If the rep BS you that the 20% will only be available AFTER they receive the trade-in, that doesn't explain the above, also why the $3 credit is instantly available.
Don't believe them that they will apply 20% later on your order after they receive the trade-in. That won't happen. Escalate to their supervisor. Even though it is only $5, that's the spirit of slickdeal. They can't lie about their discount offers
However, it's not $5 it's $11 ($20% off the retail price) plus the trade in amount.
Making this deal super slick vs just slick

There was no time for them to inspect the device before I got my credit, the Whole Foods guy asked if it works I said sure, it is just old generation. I don't know if he did anything with that info or was just curious.

My experience with the Max ones (Own two of them) has been pretty solid, haven't felt the need to do a reset like on past devices. Like others have said, you can upgrade the storage pretty easily if needed.
I just wish Amazon would make the shift proper to USB C.
