I have done trade-in a ton of times in the past. There are usually two camps.
1- you get the credit and 20% instantly. Most often when you select accept price given and the item is registered to your account.
2- you do not get the credit or 20% until the item is received, often when you select return item and/or it is not a product registered to your account.
As Tumbleweed and Wavy-Nife noted, during the trade in process it will state if it is "instant" or "once received".

Only this time instant does not seem to be working for many people, including me.
I did a trade 2 times, one for a Fire tablet couple days ago, one for this stick. Both times, for both trades, it stated the credit and 20% would be applied instantly and automatically- yet while the credit does appear, neither showed 20% in checkout.

Like I've said I have done several trades over the years, and I have only had this happen once before where it has said instantly but it did not shown up instantly.
It's a hassle contacting Customer Service because sometimes they say the 20% does not apply because the item is already on special sale, sometimes they want to take the 20% off the sale price- not full price as the coupon does. Can be a pain in the butt for $11.
Thank you for your data: Repped, but that didn't work out for me that way (this time).

My trade was selected from my registered items (I tried two different registered items), and accepted the price offered. At the next step (both times) I knew it would not instantly discount the 20% or the offered trade-in amount in advance (like you said and knew just didn't bring it up earlier) So, I knew I needed to stop. Then I removed that trade-in or it would have stayed in the "My trades" section.

For that case the next trade-in you start, whenever you do, it asks you to "add more trades". At that point, you could remove the extra trade, but I like to do it while I am thinking about it to keep things simple later. It may be weeks or months until I try again.

For me, it still worked out alright because I had one of the Amex promos (use 714 points which deducts $5 from the price as a partial payment).

I got 15% off of the original price. So I spent $12ish plus the $5 worth of points I spent. Happy camper [saying around $17. Could have been considerably better, but maybe next time. I have had it go the other way most of the time getting my value and discount up front. Even when not selecting a registered device to trade.

I own this and enjoy it. After getting a Roku 4k stick, I would get that over the Fire stick alllllll dayyyy, has built in Live TV/digital receiver, which Fire stick does not.

If Amazon rep denied the 20%, ask to talk to their supervisor. The trade-in email stated clearly "A 20% promotional credit toward a new qualifying Fire TV device is available in your Amazon account. The credit will be applied automatically once you shop for and add the qualifying device to your cart. " It said "is available ", not "will be available ".

If the rep BS you that the 20% will only be available AFTER they receive the trade-in, that doesn't explain the above, also why the $3 credit is instantly available.

Don't believe them that they will apply 20% later on your order after they receive the trade-in. That won't happen. Escalate to their supervisor. Even though it is only $5, that's the spirit of slickdeal. They can't lie about their discount offers
Agreed^
However, it's not $5 it's $11 ($20% off the retail price) plus the trade in amount.
Making this deal super slick vs just slick

You can't run Kodi etc on a Roku, the main reason to buy a firestick.

I reached out to CS right after I bought and they said they would apply $11 after. Just got the follow up email that I'm getting the $11 as a refund

The guy I got on the phone would only calculate a $5.00 refund no matter what I tried to explain to him that the 20% should be off the original price.

When you trade in an old Amazon Fire Stick do you need the original box or can you put the stick, remote, charging wire and charging brick in a zip lock and send it in? I don't think I have the old boxes. Will Amazon accept that? I assume they just do this to recycle electronic parts.
I had a Firestick Lite I traded in for this deal. No original box needed. I threw the stick, batteries, remote, an old short USB cable and a very old Motorola charger that must be 10 years old into a Ziploc bag and did the trade-in at Whole Foods. By the time I got home (10 minutes) I received the $3 and email saying I would get the 20% off, but had to chat with CS to get the 20% applied. I showed the 20% would not work for a non discounted $39.99 Firestick so they admitted a problem, but only gave 20% of $25.
There was no time for them to inspect the device before I got my credit, the Whole Foods guy asked if it works I said sure, it is just old generation. I don't know if he did anything with that info or was just curious.

I thought you only had to trade in the stick and nothing else? (select "no" when it asks about accessories during trade-in).

I put the fire tv cube in my cart and took a pic of the checkout page summary. It shows $28 off, 20% of the retail price $139.99

I think they just reduce the amount for the trade-in. Someone in the thread somewhere mentioned that they always keep their remote because they only knock a buck off for not returning it or something like that.

Trying to get the Amex offer on this but don't think I have an eligible card.

My experience with the Max ones (Own two of them) has been pretty solid, haven't felt the need to do a reset like on past devices. Like others have said, you can upgrade the storage pretty easily if needed.

I just wish Amazon would make the shift proper to USB C.

Thanks! Not buying, just curious. I only see the DOTD and Amex discount, not the trade-in 20% discount though
