For anyone not familiar, nakiris are primarily intended as vegetable knives, made for straight up and down chopping. For something more general-purpose, you'd want a santoku or gyuto (or a Chinese cleaver).

Depends on what you bought from Walmart. Some of the tramontinas are decent. I've got several Kiwis that all were around $7 each that work well in the kitchen and touch up instantly. Expensive is almost never necessary to get the job done with simple cutting tools. Victorinox and Mora are a couple of the most popular brands globally for a reason.

When I want to be fancy I use one of my custom purchases, I prefer the edge holding of the CPM154 & XHP steel in them. Never found VG10 to be all that interesting, not as good as super gold in edge holding, which is already not a high bar. Also doesn't have appreciable chip resistance at thin geometries. Gotta say magnacut in edc really has been very good in terms of wear resistance, toughness, and stain resistance. Probably going to be the steel of choice for my next boner and/or chef.

I make a lot of salads at home. I like to cook. I currently use a set 9f decent Henckels. Someone convince me I need this knife.

I tried the Chinese cleaver style knives and didn't like them. I'm used to the rolling action of cutting as opposed to cutting straight down.

Saying that, I have 2 Shun knives that are my go-to's in the kitchen.
